Sri Lanka defend lowest ever total in ODIs at Palleke
After a narrow loss in the first ODI, the Sri Lankan team staged a tremendous in the 2nd one played at Palleke International Stadium, Kandy on Thursday.
Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to
field first. Pathum Nissanka and Danushka Gunathilka began off to a decent
start before the debutant Kuhnemann picked his maiden wicket dismissing
Nissanka with a lovely catch by Carey. The Australian fielding did not look
impressive with ground fielding not up to the mark. Pat Cummins got the 2nd
wicket dismissing Gunathilka with a simple catch to Kuhnemann. Dhananjaya de
Silva and Kusal Mendis steadied the ship for Sri Lanka putting the bad
deliveries away for boundaries. At the end of the first 10 overs, Sri Lanka scored
43 for 2.
Dhanajaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis put enough pressure on
the Australian spinners, especially Swepson keeping the momentum going on for Sri
Lanka. Travis Head dropped a simple chance to dismiss Dhanajaya de Silva. A
lovely one-handed catch by Carey resulted in the wicket of Dhanajaya de Silva.
Dhanajaya and Mendis added 61 runs for the 3rd wicket. Glenn Maxwell
grabbed Kusal Mendis with a simple return catch to leave Lanka in trouble.
Charith Asalanaka struggled against the Australian bowlers before providing a simple catch as Australian bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals.
Dasun Shanaka looked in decent touch putting enough pressure
on Swepson keeping the momentum going along with Chamika Karaunate. Karaunate
also fell to hit a big shot providing a simple catch to Cummins at long-off.
Dunith Wellage faced lots of difficulties against the Australian bowlers and
was not able to get off the mark. Shanaka fell to increase the scoring rate.
Wellage then looked decent enough showing intent keeping the scoreboard ticking.
Cummins dismissed Vandersay and Wellage in quick succession to leave Lanka on
the backfoot. Theekshana and Chameera looked solid enough before the rain arrived
with the scoreboard reading 220 for 9 in 47.4 overs.
Chasing a revised target of 216 runs in 43 overs, it was a
decent start Warner showed intent right from the word go while Finch struggled
against the Lankan bowlers. Dhanajaya de Silva got rid of Finch with a lovely
delivery. Finch and Warner added 39 runs for the opening wicket. With the
powerplay reduced to 9 overs, Australia scored 42 for 1.
De Silva stunned Warner that went through his defense to
bring back Sri Lanka into the match. Wellage kept Australian batsmen under
pressure with dot deliveries. Smith and Head scored runs off pacers before
Karaunate got rid of Smith caught by Theekshana. Both batsmen added 31 runs for
the 3rd wicket.
Wellage kept the pressure on the Australian batters
dismissing Head and Labuschagne in quick succession to leave the visitors
struggling. Glenn Maxwell continued his superb form hitting some lovely shots
off Wellage releasing some pressure. Karaunate stunned Maxwell with a short delivery
caught by Shanaka. Maxwell and Carey added 38 runs for the 6th
wicket. Carey was run out while trying to take a second run as Chamika Karaunate
produced a superb throw.
Chamika Karaunate and Chameera showed great courage to bowl
out Australia for 189. The Sri Lankan fielding and catching looked impressive
with Wellage taking a good catch to dismiss Cummins. It was a superb effort by
the Lankan team after being restricted to a modest total on a tough batting
pitch.
Sri Lanka 220 for 9 in 47.4 overs (Mendis 36, Dhanajaya de
Silva 34, Cummins 4/35) beat Australia 189 in 37.1 overs (43) (Warner 37, Maxwell
30, Karaunate 3/47, Chameera 2/19) by 26 runs via DLS method.
For his match-winning spell of 3 for 47 in 7 overs, Chamika Karaunate
was named the man of the match award.
The series is leveled at 1-1 with 3 more matches to be
played. Both teams will now move to R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo for the 3rd
ODI on the 19th of June.
Sri Lanka stuns Australia by 26 runs via the DLS method to level the series at 1-1.
