Day 1 Round of ICC World T20 qualifier B
The first day of the ICC World T20 2022 qualifier B saw host Zimbabwe, Netherlands, and United States of America registering dominating wins while Uganda defeated Hong Kong in a low-scoring thriller.
There were some brilliant batting and bowling efforts across
all four matches played on the tournament's opening day.
Group A
Zimbabwe began their tournament with a resounding win over
Singapore in the opening match played at Queens Park Oval, Bulawayo on Monday. Singapore
captain Amjad Mahboob won the toss and decided to field first.
Regis Chakabva and captain Craig Ervine provided a flying
start putting pressure on the Singapore bowlers right from the word go. After a
quickfire opening partnership, Chakabva was brilliantly run out by Janak Prakash.
Ervine and Chakabva scored 51 runs in 3.4 overs laying a strong foundation for
a big total. Singapore made a strong comeback reducing Zimbabwe to 70 for 3.
Sean Williams and Sikander Raza kept the pressure on the Singapore bowling
line-up with a brilliant 103 runs partnership for the 4th wicket.
Sikander Raza smashed 87 off 40 balls while Williams made 53
runs. Milton Shumba scored a quickfire 22 from 13 deliveries to help Zimbabwe
post a massive total of 236 for 5.
In reply, Singapore was never in the hunt as they kept
losing wickets at regular intervals. Janak Prakash was the top scorer with 32
not out as Zimbabwe restricted Singapore to 125 for 7. Zimbabwe registered a
dominating 111 runs win. For his 87 off 40 balls, Sikander Raza was named the
man of the match.
Zimbabwe 236 for 5 in 20 overs (Sikander Raza 87, Sean
Williams 53, Anathna Krishna 1/31) beat Singapore 125 for 7 in 20 overs ( Janak
Prakash 32*, Tendai Chatara 3/14) by 111 runs.
USA versus Jersey
United States of America began their tournament with a
dominating win over Jersey played at Bulawayo Athletic Club, Bulawayo. USA
captain Monak Patel won the toss and decided to field first.
Rusty Theron and Nisarg Patel put enough pressure on the
Jersey batting line-up. Asa Tribe and Benjamin Ward's unbeaten partnership of 75
runs helped Jersey post 154 for 5 in 20 overs.
In reply, Steven Taylor and Monak Patel provided a decent
start putting on 47 runs for the opening wicket. Taylor looked impressive remaining
not out on 101 to help USA register a dominating 8-wicket win with 11 balls to
spare. Taylor and Aaron Jones added 88 runs for the 2nd wicket.
USA 159 for 2 in 18.1 overs ( Steven Taylor 101*, Dominic
Blampied 2/20) beat Jersey 154 for 5 in 20 overs ( Asa Tribe 73*, Benjamin Ward
38, Nisarg Patel 2/26, Rusty Theron 2/28) by 8 wickets.
For his unbeaten 101 off 55 balls, Steven Taylor was named
the man of the match award.
Group B
Netherlands versus PNG
Netherlands proved their worth as they defeated Papua New
Guinea in a one-sided affair played at Queens Sports Park, Bulawayo.
Netherlands captain Scott Edwards won the toss and decided
to bat first. Stephen Myburgh and Max O Dowd provided a flying start putting
pressure on PNG bowlers with positive intent. Hekure got the breakthrough by dismissing Myburgh to end 78 runs opening partnership. PNG bowlers made a
firm comeback picking wickets at regular intervals.
Bas De Leede 33 and Logan Van Beek 19 helped the Netherlands
post 163 for 7 in 20 overs. In reply, PNG never looked in the hunt as they lost
wickets regularly. Sese Bau was the top scorer for PNG with 35 as the rest of the batters struggled against top-quality Netherlands bowling.
Netherlands 163 for 7 in 20 overs ( Stephen Myburgh 39, Bas
De Leede 33, Semo Kamea 2/25) beat PNG 111 in 19.4 overs ( Sese Bau 35, Charles
Amini 21, Logan Van Beek 3/17, Bas De Leede 2/13) by 52 runs.
For his 33 off 27 balls and 2 for 13 in 4 overs, Bas de
Leede was named the man of the match award.
Hong Kong versus Uganda
Uganda provided the first upset by defeating an experienced Hong
Kong side in a low-scoring thriller played at Bulawayo Athletic Club, Bulawayo.
Hong Kong captain Nizakat Khan won the toss and decided to
bat first. Apart from Kinchit Shah 37, none of the Hong Kong batters struggled
against disciplined Uganda bowling. Thanks to Dinesh Nakarni brilliance, Uganda
restricted Hong Kong to a modest total of 87 for 9.
Chasing 88 runs to win, the match went right down the wire
but Rizazat Ali Shah kept his nerves to help Uganda register 2 wicket win with
3 balls to spare.
Uganda 88 for 8 in 19.3 overs ( Riazat Ali Shah 28*, Aizaz
Khan 3/22) beat Hong Kong 87 for 9 in 20 overs ( Kinchit Shah 37, Dinesh Nakarni
4/12) by 2 wickets.
For his 4 for 12 in 4 overs, Dinesh Nakarni was named the
man of the match award.
