FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2022: India and England play out a thrilling draw
It was another thrilling encounter in Pool B match as India and England played a thrilling draw played at Wagner Stadium, Amstelveen on Sunday.
The Indian team began on an aggressive note with a penalty corner
in the very first minute but did not convert it into a goal. Both teams tried to put
pressure on each other as the Indian team struggled. Peter Isabelle scored for
England with a field goal in the 8th minute to give England a 1-0 lead. After
conceding the goal, India put pressure on England with another penalty corner
as England goalkeeper Hinge saved it. England could have been 2-0 ahead but
Martin missed an open goal. At the end of the first quarter, the scores remained
1-0 in favor of England.
It was another brilliant start for India in the 2nd
quarter with their fourth penalty corner but did not trap the shot. Savita
Punia produced a superb save to deny England a 2-0 lead. Indian team struggled
with their execution. Vandana Kataria scored from a penalty corner rebound in
the 28th minute to level the scores at 1-1. At the end of the first
half, both teams ended at 1-1.
England kept the possession at the start of the third quarter.
Both teams looked sloppy with the pace slowing down. Indian team did not make any
noteworthy moves. At the end of the third quarter, the scores remained 1-1.
It was not an ideal start for the Indian team in the fourth
quarter as Navjot Kaur was sent off the field due to a foul committed. Gurjit
also was sent to the bench as India played with 9 players. England kept the
pressure on the Indian defense most likely to get a goal. Savita Punia
looked very much solid with her keeping denying England the lead. Sharmila
missed a golden open chance to take the lead. India earned their 6th
penalty corner but missed the drag-flick. England got their first penalty corner
of the match, but Indian team referred the decision and kept their review. India
and England played out a thrilling 1-1 draw.
They will play China in their next match on 5th
July 2022 at Wagner Stadium.
