FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2022: Indian team beat Japan to finish 9th

 The Indian women’s hockey team produced a disciplined performance as they defeated Japan easily to finish 9th in the prestigious tournament played at Teressa on Wednesday.

Both teams struggled initially to create chances but could not convert them into a goal. Vandana Kataria missed a golden chance as she tried to flick the shot it was well saved by the Japanese goalkeeper. Japan also got a chance, but the shot went wide of the goal. At the end of the first quarter, the scores remained at 0-0.

The second quarter began well for Team India as they entered Japan’s circle twice in the first two minutes. Yu Asai scored from a penalty corner in the 20th minute to give Japan a 1-0 lead. Indian team earned their first PC of the match but the shot was not taken properly. After conceding the penalty corner, the Indian team kept the pressure on the Japanese. Navneet Kaur scored from a field goal after relentless pressure in the 30th minute to level the scores at 1-1 and ended the first half with the same scoreline.

Both teams put pressure on each other in the third quarter but the Indian team played attacking hockey. Indian team was not able to score from another penalty corner. Deep Eka Grace scored from a penalty corner in the 38th minute giving India a 2-1 lead. Indian team kept the pressure on the Japanese defense. Indian team scored a goal but the goal was disallowed as the ball hits the knee before going into a goal. In the final 30 seconds of the 3rd quarter, Navneet Kaur scored her 2nd goal giving India a 3-1 lead.

It was an impressive performance by Indian goalkeeper Savita Punia. Japan tried its best to put pressure on the Indian defense but could not go past Savita’s goal. The match ended with India winning 3-1 and finished 9th.

The Indian team struggled in the group stages with a 1-1 draw against England and China in the first two matches before losing 3-4 against New Zealand in the last group match. They finished 3rd and faced Spain in the crossover match.

Despite having so many chances, the Indian team lost the match by 0-1 conceding the goal 3 minutes before the full time.
