India versus England 3rd ODI: Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya partnership leads India to a historic series win
Thanks to a brilliant knock by Pant and Hardik Pandya, India defeated the World Champions England in the 3rd One-day international match played at Old Trafford, Manchester on Sunday.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to
field first. Mohammed Siraj coming as a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah provided
a great start for the visitors getting rid of Jonny Bairstow providing an easy
catch to substitute Shreyas Iyer at mid-off and then produced a beauty to
dismiss Joe Root without opening their account.
Jason Roy showed intent with lovely shots keeping the
pressure on Indian bowlers along with Ben Stokes. Hardik Pandya provided the
breakthrough by getting rid of Jason Roy with a simple catch to Pant. He then
dismissed Ben Stokes as he took a good return catch leaving England in big
trouble at 74 for 4.
Mohammed Siraj troubled England captain Buttler with short
deliveries. On other hand, Moeen Ali struggled initially against disciplined Indian
bowling. Buttler and Moeen Ali showed intent against Yuzvendra Chahal keeping
the scoreboard ticking. Ravindra Jadeja was bought into the attack and struck immediately
with down leg catch by Pant. Moeen and Buttler added 75 runs for the 5th
wicket.
Liam Livingstone came to the crease and looked in decent
touch putting pressure on Indian bowling along with Buttler. England captain
Buttler completed fifty off 65 balls. Livingstone showed his class by taking on
Hardik Pandya with short deliveries. Hardik Pandya grabbed two wickets in an
over dismissing Livingstone and England captain Jos Buttler to leave England
struggling. Livingstone and Buttler added 49 runs for the 6th
wicket.
Mohammed Siraj struggled to control rhythm against Craig
Overton and David Willey. Both England batsmen kept hitting lovely shots not
allowing Indian bowlers to settle. Yuzvendra Chahal did the job again for India
dismissing Willey as Surya Kumar Yadav took a simple catch at long-on. Willey
and Overton added 48 runs for the 8th wicket. Chahal then grabbed the
wicket of Craig Overton after being dropped by Siraj. The leg-spinner ended the
innings by dismissing Reece Topley to bowl out England for 259 in 45.5 overs.
Chasing 260 runs to win, Shikhar Dhawan was dismissed
cheaply providing an easy catch to Roy. Rohit Sharma and Kohli looked impressive
with their shots before Topley dismissed both Indian batters. At the end of the first
10 overs, India struggled at 43 for 3.
After the initial tough period, Surya and Pant looked in decent
touch before Overton produced a beauty to dismiss Surya. Surya and Pant added
34 runs for the 4th wicket. Pant was given a reprieve as Buttler
missed a stumping chance. Hardik Pandya kept the pressure on the England bowlers
while Pant played according to the merit of the ball.
Hardik Pandya kept the momentum going along with Pant not
allowing England bowlers to settle. Hardik completed fifty off 43 balls while
Pant reached half-century off 71 balls. Both Indian batters looked in cracking
form keeping the scoreboard ticking. A superb diving catch by Stokes ended the
innings for Pandya. Pandya and Pant added 133 runs for the 5th wicket.
Pant just toyed with the England bowling and completed his
maiden ODI century off 106 balls while Ravindra Jadeja gave the strike to Pant.
Pant smashed David Willey for 5 boundaries in an over. He completed the job by hitting the boundary to help Team India register a 5-wicket win. Pant and Jadeja
added unbeaten 56 runs for the 6th wicket.
India 261 for 5 in 42.1 overs ( Pant 125*, Hardik Pandya 71,
Topley 3/35) beat England 259 in 45.5 overs ( Buttler 60, Roy 41, Hardik Pandya
4/24, Chahal 3/60) by 5 wickets.
For his unbeaten 125 off 113 balls and 2 catches, Pant was
named the man of the match award. Hardik Pandya was named the man of the series
award for his 100 runs and 6 wickets including career-best figures of 4 for 24.
