India versus England 5th Test 1st Day: Rishabh Pant and Jadeja leads India's fightback
The much-anticipated one-off Test match between India and England began today in a jam-packed stadium played at Birmingham on Friday.
England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to field
first. Shubman Gill opened the innings along with Cheteshwar Pujara. Both
openers showed intent hitting bad deliveries away for boundaries. The veteran
pace duo of Anderson and Stuart Broad bowled some lovely deliveries that went past the outside edge. Anderson eventually got rid of Shubman Gill providing a simple catch
to Crawley at slips.
Hanuma Vihari struggled against the top-quality bowling of
Anderson and Broad. Zak Crawley dropped a simple chance at first slips to get rid
of Vihari. Anderson produced another superb delivery to dismiss Pujara leaving
India in trouble. Matthew Potts was bought into the attack and troubled the
Indian batters. With the scoreboard reading at 53 for 2, rain arrived. Soon after the rain delay, umpires called for early lunch.
The match did not start in time due to rain. Matthew Potts
grabbed two quick wickets of Vihari with a lovely fuller delivery and then
Virat Kohli took the inside edge onto the stumps to leave India in deep
trouble. Shreyas Iyer joined in with Pant showing intent. James Anderson produced
another good delivery as Billings took a stunning one-handed catch to dismiss
Shreyas Iyer putting India in trouble at 98 for 5.
Rishabh Pant did not allow the England bowlers to settle
with lovely attacking shots. Jack Leach was taken to the cleaners by Pant and
Jadeja keeping the scoreboard ticking. Pant completed fifty off 51 balls rescuing
Indian innings. Both Indian batters never allowed the England bowlers to settle.
India went into the tea break at 174 for 5.
The third session began with Pant and Jadeja keeping the
scoreboard ticking hitting boundaries with ease. It was a superb display of
batting by both Pant and Jadeja. Pant reached his 2nd century on
England soil in Test matches off 89 balls while Jadeja reached fifty off 109
balls.
Pant then kept the pressure on the England bowlers especially
Jack Leach hitting him for big shots while Jadeja also remained steady with his
shots. Joe Root eventually grabbed the wicket of Pant trying to get his 150
caught at slips. Pant and Jadeja added 222 runs for the 6th wicket.
Ben Stokes produced a superb delivery to dismiss Shardul
Thakur. Ravindra Jadeja did not give much strike to Mohammed Shami. Jadeja
looked confident along with Shami as India ended the 1st day at 338
for 7. India scored 164 runs in the last session from 29 overs in the third
session.
