India versus England 5th Test 4th Day: Match heading towards a thrilling finish
The fourth day of the 5th Test match saw some brilliant action as Root and Bairstow provided some brilliant batting played at Birmingham on Monday.
Starting on the overnight score of 125 for 3, it was an
ideal start for Cheteshwar Pujara and Pant playing some lovely shots. Stokes
decided to bring in Root from the other end. It was a superb batting display by
Pant and Pujara keeping the pressure on England bowlers. Stuart Broad had the breakthrough in his first over dismissing Pujara providing a simple catch to
Lees. Pujara and Pant added 78 runs for the 4th wicket. Pant looked
in great touch completing fifty off 76 balls. Shreyas Iyer was peppered with
short deliveries but put pressure on the England bowlers with lovely shots.
Matthew Potts got rid of Shreyas Iyer with a short delivery
caught by Anderson. Pant and Shreyas Iyer added 37 runs for the 5th
wicket. Jack Leach got rid of the big wicket of Pant with a lovely catch by Root
at slips. Shardul Thakur struggled with short deliveries and was eventually caught
by Crawley. Mohammed Shami showed intent by providing some vital runs. India went
into the lunch break at 229 for 7.
After the lunch break, Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja, and
Jasprit Bumrah could not add many runs as Ben Stokes looked impressive to bowl
out India for 245 with an impressive lead of 377 runs.
Alex Lees and Zak Crawley provided a flying start to England putting Indian opening bowlers under pressure. The England openers kept the pressure with
lovely shots not allowing the visitors bowlers to settle. Right before the
lunch break, Bumrah produced a peach to dismiss Crawley. Crawley and Lees added
107 runs for the opening wicket. With that wicket, England went into the tea break
at 107 for 1.
Lees looked confident completing fifty off 44 balls. Soon
after the tea break, Bumrah struck again to dismiss Pope without opening his account.
Alex Lees was a brilliant runout with a mix-up with Root as India grabbed three
crucial wickets in quick succession. Hanuma Vihari dropped the big wicket of
Bairstow. After the drop chance, Root and Bairstow kept the momentum for England
thanks to wayward bowling by Indian bowlers especially Siraj, and Thakur.
Both well-set batsmen looked in complete control taking on
the Indian bowlers. Root completed fifty off 71 balls while Bairstow reached
half-century off 75 balls. England ended the fourth day at 259 for 3.
It promises to be an exciting encounter as England needs 119
runs to win while India requires 7 wickets. Root and Bairstow added so far 150
runs so far for the 4th wicket.
