Indian women versus Sri Lankan women 3rd ODI: Indian women whitewash Sri Lanka with impressive win
The Indian women’s Cricket Team ended the Sri Lankan tour with a comprehensive win in the 3rd ODI match played at Palleke International Stadium, Palleke on Thursday.
Sri Lankan captain Chamari Atthapatu won the toss and
decided to field first. It was an aggressive start by Shafali Verma putting
pressure on Lankan bowlers with positive strokes while Smriti Mandhana looked a little
cautious. Dilhari was bought into the attack early and got success dismissing
Mandhana with a lovely catch by Sanjeewani. Verma and Mandhana added 30 runs in
quick time.
The Sri Lankan bowlers lacked consistency with wide deliveries.
Yastika Bhatia showed intent after struggling initially. At the end of the first 10
overs, Indian women made 50 for 1. After the field restrictions, Bhatia and
Verma kept the momentum going hitting boundaries and taking singles easily.
Ranaweera struck for Sri Lanka as Bhatia tried to clear the
boundary but was caught by Kanchana at mid-off. Bhatia and Verma added 59 runs
for the 2nd wicket. Rashmi de Silva rattled the Indian team with quick
wickets of Verma and Harleen Deol in the same over. Ranasinghe took the big wicket
of Deepti Sharma with a good catch by Perera at slips to leave the Indian team in
trouble.
Harmanpreet Kaur showed intent on keeping the momentum going
for the Indian team. Richa Ghosh also went cheaply providing an easy catch to Sri
Lankan captain Atthapathu to leave India in deep trouble at 124 for 6. Pooja
Vastrkar was given a reprieve as the fielder at boundary dropped a chance. Kaur and
Vastrkar kept the pressure on wayward Lankan bowling not allowing them to
settle.
Kaur completed her fifty off 62 balls and kept momentum
going for India along with Pooja. Sri Lankan captain Atthapatu got the
breakthrough by dismissing Kaur. Kaur and Vastrkar added 97 runs for the 7th
wicket. Meghana Singh and Renuka Singh did not contribute much. Vastkar
completed her fifty off 63 balls to help the Indian team post 255 for 9 in 50
overs.
Chasing 256 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for the
hosts as Vishimi Gunaratne was dismissed cheaply to Meghana Singh. The Sri
Lankan captain showed intent keeping pressure on the Indian bowling taking with
positive shots. At the end of the first 10 overs, Sri Lankan women made 56 for 1.
Harmanpreet Kaur got the breakthrough by dismissing Sri Lankan
captain Chamari providing simple catch to Vastkar at long-off. Chamari and
Perera added 56 runs for the 2nd wicket. The Indian bowlers kept
tight lines and lengths not allowing Lankan batters to score runs easily.
Perera and Dilhari kept the Lankan team on course before
Rajeshwari Gayakwad deceived Dilhari with easy stumping by Bhatia. Perera and
Dilhari added 36 runs for the 3rd wicket. Gayakwad then produced
another decent delivery to dismiss Perera to leave Lanka on the back foot.
Harshita Samarawickrama and de Silva showed some intent
against Indian bowlers keeping the scoreboard ticking. Deol dismissed Harshita
taking back off the bat before hitting stumps. Harshita and De Silva added 36
runs for the 5th wicket.
The Indian bowlers kept taking wickets at regular intervals
leaving the Lankan team in trouble. Rashmi de Silva and De Silva kept the hosts on
track with good shots before Rashmi exposed her stumps to be bowled.
Inoka Ranaweera looked solid with her defense giving strike
to Nilakshi de Silva. Deepti Sharma ended the innings by getting rid of Ranaweera
taking the inside edge onto the stumps. Nilakshi de Silva remained not out on
48.
With this win, Indian women whitewashed Sri Lanka by 3-0 and
gained important points in the latest ICC ODI Women’s Championship 2022-2025
cycle.
Indian women 255 for 9 in 50 overs ( Kaur 75, Vastrkar 56,
Ranaweera 2/22, Athhapatu 2/45) beat Sri Lankan women 216 in 47.3 overs ( Nilakshi
De Silva 48*, Chamari Atthapathu 44, Rajeshwari
Gayakwad 3/36, Vastrkar 2/33) by 39 runs.
For her 75 off 88 balls and 1 for 21, Harmanpreet Kaur was
named the player of the match award. She was also awarded the player of the
series award for 119 runs in 2 matches.
