Malaysia Open 2022: HS Prannoy and Sindhu lose in the quarterfinals
The Indian challenge ended as both PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy lost in the quarterfinals of the Super 750 Malaysia Open 2022 played in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Friday.
PV Sindhu lost to nemesis Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei in
three thrilling games. It was a dominating performance by the Indian in the
first game putting Tai under pressure with brilliant smashes and drop shots. At
the mid-game interval, Sindhu led 11-7. After the mid-game interval, Sindhu
dominated her opposition winning the first game easily at 21-13.
The second game saw Tai upped her style of play putting
enough pressure on Sindhu. At the mid-game interval, the Olympic silver medallists
kept the Indian struggling with a dominating 11-3 lead at the interval. Sindhu
made a strong comeback with 5 successive points but, Tai showed skills to win
the second game easily at 21-15.
Sindhu and Tai Tzu Ying started the third game on an even
keel with alternate points. Both players looked in great form with smashes and
drop shots. At the mid-game interval, Tai had a slender 11-9 lead. After the
break, Tai showed her class with smashes making life tough for Sindhu, and won
the decider by 21-13 to knock the Indian out of the tournament. Sindhu’s poor record
against Tai Tzu Ying continued.
HS Prannoy lost to Jonathan Christie in two thrilling games.
The Indian did not start well in the initial stages but showed character to put
the Indonesian player under pressure. At the mid-game interval, Christie led
11-9. After the break, Prannoy showed his fighting spirit to level scores at
13-13. The Indian showed great fighting spirit to save 3 match points but
Christie held his nerves to win the first game at 21-18.
The second game initially began well for Prannoy with a 2-0 lead.
There were a lot of long rallies that tested both players' fitness. Prannoy showed
excellent fighting spirit to reduce the gap, but Christie led 11-9 at the mid-game
interval. After the break, Christie kept the pressure on Prannoy with smashes and
won the second game easily at 21-16 to move into the semi-finals of the tournament.
With this loss, the Indian challenge in the Malaysian Open
2022 ended. HS Prannoy and Sindhu performed well reaching the quarterfinals
while Saina, Praneeth, and Sameer Verma lost in the first round itself. Satwik and
Chirag Shetty moved into the second round but withdrew due to an injury.
