Singapore Open 2022: 4 Indian shuttlers qualify for the quarterfinals

 The Indian shuttlers had a great outing as 4 out of the 6 progressed into the quarterfinals of the Super 500 Singapore Open played on Thursday.

PV Sindhu defeated pre-qualifier Nguyen of Vietnam in three games. It was a very closely fought affair as the Indian lost the first game by 19-21 before holding her nerves to win the next two games at 21-19, 21-18. Sindhu struggled for rhythm against the qualifier, but her experience helped her to progress into the next round. She will now take on Han Yue of China.

Saina Nehwal stunned the World number 9 He Bingjao in three thrilling games. The first game was a closely fought affair before the Indian held her nerves to win the first game at 21-19. He then showed her class by playing attacking badminton to win the second game easily by 21-11 to force the match into the decider.

Saina looked in prime form right from the word go putting enough pressure on the Chinese. At the mid-game break, the India had a decent lead. After the break, Bingjao tried her best to reduce the lead but Saina showed her class to win the third game at 21-17. She will now face Aya Ohori of Japan. This will be her first quarterfinals in 15 months.

Ashmita Chaliha could not provide the same performance as she lost to Han Yue of China in straight games. The youngster lost by 9-21, 13-21 in a one-sided contest.

HS Prannoy proved his worth one more time as he defeated World number 4 Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in three games. Chou looked in complete control right from the word go in the first game winning it by 21-14. The second game saw a closely fought affair before Prannoy held on to his nerves to win it 22-20.

Both players fought for each point in the third game also but Prannoy held on to win by 21-18 to move into the quarterfinals. He will face K Naraoka of Japan who defeated Jonathan Christie of Indonesia in three games by 7-21, 21-18, 21-15.

Mithun Manjunath went down fighting to N Nguyen in three games. The first game saw Nguyen providing a dominating display winning the first game 21-10. Manjunath cameback strongly with great energy winning the second game by 21-18 to force the match into the decider.

Despite giving a tough fight, Manjunath lost the third game by 16-21. It was a good performance by Manjunath who defeated Kidambi Srikanth in the first round.

The men’s doubles pair of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila punched above their weight as they defeated 6th seeded Goh S F and Nur Izzuddin of Malaysia in three games. It was a very closely fought match as the Malaysian pair won the first game by 21-18.

Both pairs took alternate points in the second game before the Indian pair won it by 24-22. The third and deciding game also was a closely fought affair as Arjun and Kapila held onto their nerves to win it 21-18 to move into the quarterfinals. They will now face Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiwan of Indonesia.
