Singapore Open 2022: PV Sindhu progress into semi-finals, others crash out

 PV Sindhu was the only Indian shuttler to progress into the semi-finals while all other 3 lost their respective matches of Super 500 Singapore Open 2022 played on Friday.

The two-time Olympic medallists Sindhu edged past Han Yue of China in three thrilling games. It was a decent start for both players in the first game before the Chinese put enough pressure on the Indian with an 11-9 lead at the interval. After the break, Sindhu struggled to keep up with the pace and lost the first game by 17-21.

It was a much better start for the Indian in the second game putting Yue under pressure with smashes and drop shots. At the mid-game interval, Sindhu led 11-8. After the break, the Indian showed her class winning the second game easily at 21-11 to force the game into a decider.

In the decider, both players fought for each point as the Chinese took an 11-8 lead at the interval. After the break, Sindhu fought back strongly to level the scores at 14-14. Sindhu maintained the lead as Yue showed her character to make the match tough. The Indian challenge was successful winning the third game at 21-19. She will now face Kawakami of Japan.

Saina Nehwal went down fighting to Aya Ohori of Japan in three games. It was a closely fought start with both players taking alternate points. The Japanese put enough pressure on the Indian taking an 11-5 lead at the break. After the interval, Ohori showed no mercy winning the first game 21-13.

The second game saw Saina Nehwal making a strong comeback putting Ohori under pressure with smashes and drop shots. At the mid-game interval, Nehwal led 11-7. After the break, the Indian maintained the pressure winning the second game easily at 21-15 to force the game into a decider.

Saina had a great start to the third game putting enough pressure on Ohori. After the break, the Indian looked good with a 3-point lead. The Japanese made a strong comeback to reduce the gap and then leveled the scores at 20-20. Ohori then held onto her nerves winning the third game in a thrilling 22-20 scoreline.

The only male shuttler in the fray for India, HS Prannoy lost to Japanese sensation K Narakoka of Japan in three games. The Indian provided a dominating display as he won the first game easily at 21-14. Narakoka fought back strongly as he registered 21-14 to force the match into decider.

It was a closely fought affair in the third game before the Japanese held onto his nerves to win it by 21-18.

The young pairing of Arjun and Kapila went down fighting to experienced Indonesian pairing of Hendra Setiwan and Mohammad Ahsan in three games. The Indian played attacking hockey in the first game-winning it easily by 21-10. Dhruv and Arjun showed fighting spirit but lost the next two games at 18-21, and 17-21 to be knocked out of the tournament.
