Zimbabwe and Netherlands qualify for the ICC World T20 2022
Zimbabwe and Netherlands made it into the first round of ICC World T20 2022 to be played in Australia later this year after winning their respective matches.
Zimbabwe versus PNG
The hosts made it into the prestigious ICC World T20
tournament with a big win over Papua New Guinea played at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo.
Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine won the toss and decided to bat first. Regis
Chakabva provided a flying start to the hosts putting PNG bowlers under
pressure. Chakabva scored quickfire 30 off 19 balls and added 38 runs for the opening
wicket with Ervine.
Wesley Medherve and Ervine kept the momentum going for
Zimbabwe keeping the momentum going. Sikandar Raza, Sean Williams, Medherve all
contributed to team success. Ervine and Medherve added 63 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Sean Williams and Milton Shumba provided the impetus with big shots as
they added quickfire 49 runs for the 5th wicket. At the end of 20
overs, Zimbabwe posted a massive total of 199 for 5 in 20 overs.
Chasing 200 runs to win, it was a shaky start as Lega Siaka
was run out of the first ball. They lost three quick wickets. Tony Ura looked in sensational form putting
enough pressure on Zimbabwe bowlers along with Charles Amini. Jongwe got rid of
Amini to end 49 runs stand for the 4th wicket. Ura kept hopes of PNG
alive but could not convert it into a big score. Zimbabwe won the match by 27 runs.
Zimbabwe 199 for 5 in 20 overs ( Medherve 42, Ervine 38,
Amini 2/28) beat PNG 172 for 8 in 20 overs ( Tony Ura 66, Amini 31, Muzabrani 2/24)
by 27 runs.
For his 66 off 35 balls, Tony Ura was named the man of the
match award.
Netherlands versus USA
Netherlands cruised past the USA in the second semi-finals
played at Bulawayo Athletic Club. USA captain Monak Patel won the toss and
decided to bat first. Steven Taylor and USA captain Patel provided a flying
start putting pressure on Netherlands bowling. Both USA openers put on 51 runs
in 5.1 overs laying a strong foundation for a big total.
After the loss of Taylor’s wicket, Netherlands bowlers kept it
tight and did not allow USA batters to score runs easily. At the end of 20
overs, USA was bowled out for 138 in 19.4 overs.
Chasing 139 runs to win, Netherlands lost an early wicket of
Stephen Myburgh without opening his account. De Leede kept the pressure on USA
bowlers and remained not out on 91 to help the Netherlands lead the chase with 7 wicket
win with 1 over to spare.
Netherlands 139 for 3 in 19 overs ( de Leede 91*, Cameron Stevenson
1/23) beat USA 138 in 19.4 overs ( Monak Patel 32, Nisarg Patel 28, de Leede
2/23) by 7 wickets.
For his 2 for 23 and 91 not out, de Leede was named the man
of the match award.
With these two teams, the line-up for the 1st
round of ICC World Cup 2022 has been mapped out.
