CWG 2022 Day 4 Table Tennis: India men’s team reach finals
The defending Champions India produced a gritty performance as they defeated Nigeria in the 2nd semi-finals of the Men’s table tennis event played at National Exhibition Centre on Monday.
Harmeet Desai and Sathiyan gave India a perfect start as they
defeated Abiodun and Omotayo in the men’s doubles. The Indian pairing looked in
decent shape after a cautious start before winning the first game at 11-6.
The second game saw the Indian pair dominating right from
the word go putting pressure on the Nigerian pair. Despite Nigerian effort, Desai
and Sathiyan took 2nd game at 11-7. It was a closely fought third
game before the Indian pair showed their class to win it by 11-7.
Achanta Sharath Kamal produced a remarkable performance as he
defeated the experienced Aruna Quadri in the men’s singles. The experienced Indian
started the first game on a decent note before the Nigerian player showed his class
to lead 9-7. Sharath Kamal showed his class to win the first game at 11-9.
The second game was an evenly contested affair with both
players taking alternate points till 4-4. Quadri made a strong comeback into
the match putting pressure on Sharath before winning it by 11-9.
It was a closely fought third game as Sharath took a lead
before Quadri equaled the score at 5-5. The match looked even at 8-8 before
the experienced Achanta took 3 points in succession to take it 11-8.
It was another superb display of table tennis by both
Sharath and Quadri. The Indian took a slender lead before the Nigerian great
showed his class. The match ebbed and flowed with the scores level at 9-9. Both
players never gave up before Sharath Kamal produced a sensational display to upset
Aruna Quadri by 15-13 in the fourth to give India a 2-0 lead in the tie.
Sathiyan Gnanasekran took on Olajide Omotayo in the second
singles match. The Indian began the first game on a solid note with aggressive
shots. It was a closely fought game as Sathiyan held his nerves to win the first
game at 11-8.
The Nigerian looked solid in the 2nd game putting
enough pressure on Sathiyan and won the second game easily at 11-4.
Sathiyan upped his pace during the 3rd game after a 4-4 scoreline. The Indian produced a stunning comeback to take the third game at 11-6.
The fourth game saw both players fighting for each point.
From 6-6 onwards, Sathiyan showed his class to dominate his opponent. Despite the Nigerian taking a timeout, the Indian showed nerves to win it by 11-8 to win
the tie 3-0.
With this win, the defending Champions India will take on
Singapore in the finals to be played on 2nd August 2022.
