CWG 2022 Men’s Hockey: India seal top spot with a resounding win over Wales
The Indian men’s hockey team provided a dominating display to defeat Wales in their last league game against Wales played at National Exhibition Centre on Thursday.
It was an aggressive start for the Indian team as they kept the pressure on the Wales defense. India was awarded a penalty corner as the decision was
overturned to free hit. After the decision was overturned, India earned another PC,
but it hit was well saved by the Welsh goalkeeper. Indian team kept the momentum
with aggressive moves but did not yield any results. At the end of the first quarter,
scores remained 0-0.
Krishna Pathak replaced P Sreejesh at the start of the second
quarter. Benjamin Francis was awarded a green card that meant 2 minutes suspension.
India earned a penalty corner as Harmanpreet Singh converted it into a goal in the
18th minute to give a 1-0 lead. Harmanpreet Singh produced another superb
penalty corner in the next minute allowing India to double their lead. India kept
the pressure on the Welsh defense.
Wales provided some moments of magic, but Krishna Pathak
denied them a goal. Mandeep Singh was awarded a green card. The Indian forwards
showed their class with some lovely moves but did not result in goals. Wales
got their best chance of the match as Shipprley failed to get deflection. At
the end of the first half, India led 2-0.
Amit Rohidas cameback into the field as he was injured. The
Indian team showed their class by making aggressive moves putting enough
pressure on the Welsh defense. India was awarded a penalty stroke after 2nd
penalty corner hit the Welsh defender. Harmanpreet Singh converted stroke into a goal
in the 41st minute to give India a 3-0 lead. At the end of the third
quarter, India led 3-0.
The Indian team got off to a perfect start in the 4th
quarter as a pass from Shamsher gives allows Gurjant Singh to tap a shot into a
goal. The goal was disallowed but the Indian team reviewed the decision, and it was
overturned in the 49th minute to make it 4-0. Wales provided some
resistance with some lovely moves. Gareth Furlong converted a penalty corner into
a goal in the 54th minute to open Wales's account.
India looked cool and calm with their style of play as they
ended the match with a 4-1 win. With this win, India sealed the top spot in
Pool B. The hosts needed to win by 16 goals but won the match by 10-2.
India will now play the second-place team in Pool A. New
Zealand, South Africa, and Pakistan are at 4 points each with the same goal
difference of minus 2.
