CWG 2022 Men’s Hockey: Indian team thrash Canada

 The Indian men’s hockey team came from the disappointment of a 4-4 draw against England provided a dominating display against Canada in their 3rd Group match played at National Exhibition Centre on Wednesday.

It was an aggressive start by the Indian team right from the word go putting enough pressure on the Canadian defense. After relentless attacks, India kept the pressure on the Canadian defense with successive penalty corners. Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner in the 7th minute. Varun Kumar produced a stunning long pass and Amit Rohidas shot it into a goal in the 10th minute to give India a 2-0 lead. At the end of the first quarter, India led 2-0.

The second quarter also saw the Indian team dominating Canada with their attacking play. Lalit Upadhyay scored from a brilliant rebound shot despite Candidan's goalkeeper making a good save to give India a 3-0 lead in the 20th minute. Gurjant made a diving effort as Hardik entered inside D and passed it to Gurjant in the 27th minute giving India a 4-0 lead. At the end of the first half, India dominated the possession and ended at 4-0.  

India continued their aggressive intent in the 3rd quarter again as Akashdeep Singh converted from a brilliant finish in the 38th minute. The Indians looked at ease as the Canadian team looked out of color. At the end of the third quarter, India led 5-0.

It was another superb start for the Indian team in the fourth quarter also. Harmanpreet Singh converted another brilliant goal from a penalty corner in the 56th minute to give a commanding 6-0 lead. Mandeep Singh made it 7-0 with a reverse flick shot inside the D beating Candidan goalkeeper bottom right corner. Akashdeep Singh converted the easiest tap from a brilliant pass by Abishek to give India a commanding 8-0 lead.

It was a dominating performance by the Indian team after conceding 3 late goals. With this win, India moved to the top of the points table due to a better goal difference. They will now play Wales in their last league match.
