CWG 2022 SF 1: Indian women progress into the finals in a nail-biting contest

The Indian women’s Cricket Team registers a thrilling win over hosts England in the first semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games 2022 cricket competition played at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Saturday.

Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and decided to bat first. It was an aggressive start by Smriti Mandhana putting pressure on England bowlers right from the word go with attacking strokes. The stylish left-handed batter looked in sublime touch against pacers and spinners making life tough for stand-in captain Nat Sciver. Mandhana kept the momentum going for India reaching her fifty off just 23 balls. At the end of the first six overs, Indian women raced away to 64 for 0.

Soon after the field restrictions, England bowlers made a strong comeback with disciplined bowling. Freya Kemp produced the magic dismissing Shafali Verma with a simple catch to Katherine Brunt. Verma made just 15 off 17 balls and added 76 runs for the opening wicket. Smriti Mandhana also fell trying to scoop providing an easy catch to Wong at short third fine leg. Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur struggled against disciplined England bowling. Kaur was given out by the umpire but on review, it was overturned to not out as it hit the inside edge of the bat.

Kaur put pressure with some lovely shots before a superb catch by Boucher nabbed her wicket. Deepti Sharma came to the crease and showed intent against Ecclestone maintaining pressure on the England bowlers along with Jemimah Rodrigues. Freya Kemp dropped a simple chance to dismiss Deepti Sharma. Sharma and Rodrigues kept the momentum going for India before Katherine Brunt dismissed Deepti with a simple return catch. Sharma and Rodrigues added 53 runs for the 4th wicket.

Pooja Vastrkar fell without facing a delivery trying to take the second run. Rodrigues smashed a lovely boundary off the last delivery to help the Indian team post 164 for 5 in 20 overs.

Chasing 165 runs to win, Sophie Dunkley and the experienced Wyatt showed intent with lovely shots keeping the pressure on the Indian bowlers, especially Renuka Thakur. Deepti Sharma got the breakthrough by dismissing Dunkley. Wyatt showed her experience with positive strokes while Alice Capsey also looked good. At the end of the first six overs, England women made 58 for 1.

Capsey was run out as she did not ground the bat while taking the second run. Capsey and Wyatt added 35 runs for the 2nd wicket. The Indian bowlers kept it tight with disciplined bowling. Sneha Rana produced magic getting rid of Wyatt hitting the bat onto the stumps to bring back India into the game.

Nat Sciver and Amy Jones kept the England team on course for a victory by hitting some lovely shots. A good throw by Radha Yadav and run-out by Sneha Rana resulted in the wicket of Amy Jones. Sciver and Jones added 54 runs for the 4th wicket. Stand-in captain Nat Sciver provided some hope with big six.

Sciver was run out while trying to take the second run with a lovely throw by Mandhana and gather Taniya Bhatia. The Indian team had to keep fielders inside the circle due to not finishing the 20 overs on time. Sneha Rana delivered the goods dismissing Katherine Brunt. Rana held her nerves as Ecclestone smashed a six of final delivery as it was not enough for England to win the match.

Indian women 164 for 5 in 20 overs ( Mandhana 61, Rodrigues 44*, Freya Kemp 2/22) beat England women 160 for 6 in 20 overs ( Sciver 41, Wyatt 35, Sneha Rana 2/28, Deepti Sharma 1/18) by 4 runs.
