CWG 2022 Table Tennis: Indian men’s team defend title
The Indian men’s table tennis created history as they defended their title beating Singapore in a closely fought contest played at National Exhibition Centre on Tuesday.
Harmeet Desai and Sathiyan produced a dominating performance
as they defeated Yong Quek and Yew Peng of Singapore in the men’s doubles. The
Indian pair started the first game with aggression taking decent lead before Quek
and Peng level the score at 6-6. Sathiyan and Desai had 2 match points but
Singapore pair level the score. The match ebbed and flowed before Indian pair
won the first game at 13-11.
The second game saw brilliant points by both pairs taking
alternate points till 6-6. Sathiyan and Desai produced a dominating display to
take the 2nd game at 11-6. It was a dominating display by the Indian
pair in the 3rd game as they did not allow the Singapore pair chance
winning it by 11-4 to give India 1-0 lead.
Achanta Sharath Kamal lost to Zhe Chew of Singapore in the
first singles. Chew showed his class by putting pressure on veteran shots. The Singapore
player won 1st game easily at 11-7.
The second game was a closely fought affair as Sharath took
a decent lead initially before Chew level the scores at 5-5. The Indian had 2
match points before the Singapore player level the scores at 10-10. Sharath
showed nerves of steel to win the 2nd game by 14-12.
It was a disappointing performance by Sharath Kamal as he
committed lots of unforced errors. Chew showed his class to win the third game
by 11-3.
The fourth game saw both players taking alternate points
before Sharath took a 6-3 lead. Chew made a strong comeback to level the score
and then won it by 11-9 to level the tie at 1-1.
In the second men’s singles, Sathiyan defeated Yew Pang. The
Indian looked out of sorts in the initial stages with poor shots but made a stunning
comeback to level the scores at 9-9. Sathiyan won first game by 12-10.
The second game was a disappointing performance by Sathiyan
as Pang kept the pressure winning it by 11-7.
Sathiyan produced dominating performance in the third game
not allowing his opponent to comeback winning it by 11-7. The Indian continued his
performance in the fourth game as he looked in complete control to win it by
11-4 to give India 2-1 lead.
Harmeet Desai defeated Chew to win the gold medal. The
Indian had a shaky start as Chew showed his domination. Desai showed his class winning
six points in succession to win the first game at 11-7.
Desai never looked troubled after little scare by Chew. It
was a dominating performance by Desai winning the 2nd game at 11-5.
Harmeet Desai started the 3rd game on a positive
note with 5-1 lead. Chew took 3 points in succession after timeout. Desai
showed his domination to win the gold medal by 11-6.
It was a superb performance by the Indian men’s table tennis
as they remained unbeaten in the entire tournament.
