CWG 2022 Women’s hockey: Indian women’s team clinch historic bronze medal

 The Indian women’s hockey defeated New Zealand in a penalty shootout after 1-1 at regular time played at National Exhibition Centre on Sunday.

New Zealand began the first quarter on a positive note with aggressive moves with Savita Punia making a superb save. Savita made another superb save from a rebound shot by penalty corner as NZ could not convert it into a goal. Indian team missed a golden chance of converting a field goal as Sharmila Devi was not able to deflect the shot. Salima Tete shot from the rebound by Vandana Katria did not yield any results. At the end of the first quarter, scores remained 0-0.

The second quarter saw the Indian team putting pressure on New Zealand's defense but did not convert chances into goals. New Zealand made a counterattacking move that left the Indian defense stunned but there was no deflection. The pressure of aggressive moves resulted in a goal as Navneet Kaur shot was blocked by the goalkeeper, but Salima Tete put into a goal as during the 29th minute to give India a 1-0 lead and ended the first half with the same scoreline. New Zealand earned 1 PC as compared to 0 by India.

India started the third quarter with aggressive moves but could not convert chances into goals. India earned their first penalty corner of the match but the NZ defender cleared the shot. New Zealand showed their attacking skills and kept the Indian defense under pressure. The Indian team was down to 10 players as one of their defenders sent out for 2 minutes. The Indian team had chances, but the lack of finishing did not allow them to take a 2-0 lead. New Zealand scored the goal but it was disallowed as the ball did not travel 5 meters. At the end of the third quarter, India still led 1-0.

Both teams had chances of converting but could not do it in the initial stages. The Indian team earned a penalty corner but the shot was well saved by the NZ keeper. After a good review, India was awarded another PC but did not convert anything. NZ decided to take away the goalkeeper. Lalremsimi was given a yellow card. With 30 seconds left, despite Savita Punia’s save, NZ was awarded a penalty stroke from PC. Oliva converted a stroke into a goal to level the scores at 1-1 and took the match into shootouts.

New Zealand started the shootout as Hull converted first into a goal. The Indian missed the first chance going wide. Savita Punia produced a beautiful save after the retake. Sangita Kumari converted India’s second shot after a tap-in after diving in. Savita Punia produced some sensational saves to deny New Zealand the lead. Navneet Kaur converted India’s third shot into a goal giving India a 2-1 lead.

Savita Punia denied New Zealand with beautiful saves to give India a 2-1 win in shootouts. Neha could not convert the shot into a goal.
