England versus South Africa 1st Test 3rd Day: South Africa register thumping win
The South African team produced a brilliant performance as they register a thumping win over hosts England on the 3rd day itself played at iconic Lords Cricket Ground, Lords on Friday.
Starting on an overnight score of 289 for 7, Kagiso Rabada was dismissed
in the first over itself with a one-handed catch by Stuart Broad. Anrich Nortje
and Marco Jansen provided some vital runs taking the advantage of the
aggressive field set-up. England captain Stokes decided to take the 2nd
new ball immediately. Nortje and Jansen kept the scoreboard ticking frustrating
the England bowlers.
Broad was bought into the attack and dismissed Jansen with a
good catch by Crawley. Jansen and Nortje added 29 runs 9th wicket.
Broad grabbed the wicket of Lungi Ngidi as Bairstow took a lovely juggling
catch at slips to bowl out South Africa for 326 with a lead of 161 runs.
In reply, England openers Zak Crawley and Alex Lees
struggled against the top-quality pace bowling of South Africa. Lees was given a reprieve
as Petersen dropped a tough catch. Keshav Maharaj was bought into the attack
early and dismissed Crawley to provide South Africa the breakthrough.
Right at the stroke of lunch break, Maharaj struck
dismissing Pope via review. The umpire called it not out but on review, it was
overturned to out as it was hitting the stumps. England went into the lunch
break at 38 for 2.
After the lunch break, Lees and Root showed some intent
before Ngidi provided the big wicket of Root as Markram took a good low catch
to derail England’s innings. Jonny Bairstow looked decent with some lovely
shots before Nortje grabbed 3 big wickets of Bairstow, Lees, and Foakes in quick
succession to put England in big trouble.
Stuart Broad showed intent by playing aggressive strokes along
with Stokes. Broad took on the South African bowlers but eventually fell to
Rabada. Broad and Stokes added 55 runs for the 7th wicket. It was downslide
from there onwards for England as they were bundled cheaply to give the visitors an
innings and 12 runs win.
South
Africa 326 in 89.1 overs ( Sarel Erewee 73, Elgar 47, Jansen 48, Broad 3/71 Stokes
3/71)beat England 165 in 45 overs ( Pope 73, Stokes 20, Rabada 5/52, Nortje
3/63) and 149 in 37.4 overs ( Broad 35, Lees 35, Nortje 3/47, Rabada 2/27) by
an innings and 12 runs.
With
this win, South Africa consolidated their top spot in the ICC 2021/23 Test
Championship points table.
For
his 7 wickets in the match, Kagiso Rabada was awarded the man of the match. South
Africa lead the 3-match Test series 1-0. The second Test will be played from 25th
August at Old Trafford, Manchester.
South Africa beat England by an innings and 12 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series
