India versus West Indies 2nd T20I: West Indies level the series with a thrilling win

 West Indies produced a spirited performance as they defeated India in a thrilling 2nd T20I match played at St Kitts, Basseterre on Monday.

West Indies captain Nicolas Pooran won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start for the hosts as Obed McCoy got rid of Rohit Sharma off the very 1st delivery as the ball bounced providing a simple catch to Akeal Hossein at the short-third man. Surya Kumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer put enough pressure on Alazzari Joseph hitting him for 17 runs including 2 sixes.

McCoy struck again in his 2nd over dismissing Surya Kumar Yadav going across providing a simple catch to Devon Thomas. Rishabh Pant showed his intent right from the word go. Joseph troubled Shreyas Iyer with a lovely delivery caught by Devon Thomas to leave India in trouble. At the end of the first six overs, India scored 56 for 3.

Soon after the field restrictions, Akeal Hossein grabbed the important wicket of Pant trying to put pressure on the spinner. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja steadied the ship for India taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Both looked in decent touch before Jason Holder provided an important breakthrough dismissing Hardik Pandya as Odean Smith took a good juggling catch. Pandya and Jadeja added 43 runs for the 5th wicket.

It was a disciplined bowling effort as Obed McCoy grabbed wickets of Dinesh Karthik, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the same over to derail the Indian innings. Dinesh Karthik and Ashwin were caught while Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed via review for caught behind. Jason Holder ended the innings with a lovely yorker to dismiss Avesh Khan to bowl out India for 138 in 19.4 overs. Obed McCoy registered the best figures by a West Indies in T20Is with figures of 6 for 17 in 4 overs.    

Chasing 139 runs to win, Brandon King came into the playing XI looked in decent touch while Kyle Mayers struggled against disciplined Indian bowling. At the end of the first six overs, West Indies looked in a comfortable position at 46 for 0.

Hardik Pandya provided the breakthrough by dismissing Kyle Mayers caught by R Ashwin. Mayers and King added 46 runs for the opening wicket. Brandon King kept the pressure on Indian bowling while Pooran showed intent. R Ashwin dismissed West Indies captain Pooran caught by Surya Kumar at long-on. The Indian bowlers kept it tight not allowing Shimron Hetymer to score runs easily while Brandon King looked in decent touch completing fifty off 39 balls.

Ravindra Jadeja dismissed struggling Shimron Hetymer with a simple return catch to bring back India into the game. Avesh Khan produced a stunning yorker to dismiss well-set Brandon King. Devon Thomas was included in the playing XI but struggled initially.

Arshdeep Singh looked cool and calm with his bowling giving away just 4 runs in the 17th over. He then followed it up with another superb over giving away 6 runs including the big wicket of Rovman Powell with a brilliant yorker.

With 10 runs needed to defend, Rohit Sharma decided to give Avesh Khan the 20th over. Devon Thomas showed his nerves as he six off a no-ball and then completed the match with a four to help West Indies register 5 wicket win.

West Indies 141 for 5 in 19.2 overs ( Brandon King 68, Devon Thomas 31*, Hardik Pandya 1/22, Arshdeep Singh 1/26) beat India 138 in 19.4 overs ( Hardik Pandya 31, Ravindra Jadeja 27, Obed McCoy 6/17, Holder 2/23) by 5 wickets.

For his career-best figures of 6 for 17, Obed McCoy was named the man of the match award. With this win, West Indies leveled the series at 1-1. The third T20I match will be played at the same venue on 2nd August 2022.
