Asia Cup 2022 Match 5: Sri Lanka qualify for Super 4 stage with a thrilling win

 Sri Lanka became the 2nd team from Group B to qualify for the Super 4 stage as they defeated Bangladesh in a thrilling encounter played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Thursday.

Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and decided to field first. Ashita Fernando made his T20I debut for Lanka and got a breakthrough initially dismissing Sabbir Rahman providing a simple catch to Kusal Mendis. Mehidy Hasan Miraz opened the innings and provided entertainment with lovely shots putting Lankan bowlers under pressure. On other hand, Shakib AL Hasan struggled to time the ball. At the end of the first six overs, 55 for 1.

Soon after the field restrictions, Hasaranga grabbed the big wicket of Miraz. Miraz and Shakib AL Hasan added 39 runs for the 2nd wicket. Chamika Karaunate dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim with a lovely delivery to leave Bangladesh in trouble. Shakib AL Hasan showed intent after the initial struggle to keep the momentum along with Afif Hossain. Mahesh Theekshana rattled the middle stump of Shakib AL Hasan to leave Bangladesh in big trouble. Afif Hossain and Mahmudullah took on Sri Lanka’s main bowler Hasaranga with some huge hits. Both looked in great touch as they kept the scoring rate up.

Dilshan Madhushanka made the breakthrough by dismissing Afif as Hasaranga took a decent catch. Afif and Mahmudullah added 57 runs for the 5th wicket. Hasaranga grabbed the wicket of Mahmudullah to put a stop to Bangladesh's innings. Mossadek Hossain and Taskin Ahmed provided some vital runs in the final over helping the Bangla tigers post 183 for 7 in 20 overs.

Chasing 184 runs to win, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis started off cautiously in the first 2 overs. Nissanka and Mendis showed their class putting pressure on Shakib AL Hasan. Ebadot Hossain making his T20I debut grabbed 2 big wickets of Nissanka and Asalanaka to dent Sri Lanka's innings. The Lankan openers added 45 runs for the opening wicket. At the end of the first six overs, Sri Lanka made 48 for 2.

Mendis was lucky enough as he was dropped early by Rahim. Later, he was caught off a no-ball, but umpires called him back. A stunning catch by Taskin Ahmed made sure that Danushka Gunathilka was dismissed cheaply. Taskin Ahmed then got rid of Bhanuka Rajapaksa with a simple catch to substitute Mohammad Naim at third man to leave Sri Lanka in trouble. Dasun Shanaka struggled initially against disciplined Bangladesh bowling, but Mendis looked impressive.

Bangladesh's captain did not review the decision as there was an edge of Mendis. Kusal completed fifty off 32 balls to keep Lanka’s hopes alive. Shanaka upped the ante with some lovely shots. Another stunning catch by Taskin Ahmed resulted in the wicket of Kusal Mendis. Kusal and Shanaka added 54 runs for the 5th wicket.

Taskin Ahmed dismissed Hasaranga with an easy catch to Mahedi Hasan. Shakib AL Hasan bowled all his specialist bowlers out. Mahedi Hasan got rid of Sri Lankan captain Shanaka with an easy catch to Mossadek Hossain at long-on. The match ebbed and flowed right through the match.

Shakib AL Hasan provided a superb direct throw to dismiss Chamika Karaunate. Ashita Fernando smashed Ebadot Hossain for a boundary. Bangladesh looked awful with 4 no-balls and 8 wides. Fernando made the equation easier with a lovely shot off Mahedi Hasan. Hasan ended the match with a no-ball as Fernando took 2 runs to help Sri Lanka win the match by 2 wickets.

Sri Lanka 184 for 8 in 19.2 overs ( Kusal Mendis 60, Shanaka 45, Ebadot Hossain 3/51, Taskin Ahmed 2/24) beat Bangladesh 183 for 7 in 20 overs ( Afif Hossain 39, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 38, Chamika Karaunate 2/32, Hasranaga 2/41) by 2 wickets.

For his 60 off 37 balls and 2 catches, Kusal Mendis was awarded the man of the match award. They finished in the number 2 spot in Group B.
