Asia Cup 2022 Super 4 Match 3: Sri Lanka stun India with a last over thriller
Sri Lanka produced another superb performance as they registered a last over win over defending Champions India played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Tuesday.
Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and decided to
field first. It was an ideal start for the Lankan team as Mahesh Theekshana got
rid of KL Rahul. Rahul decided to review the decision, but it took 5 minutes to
retain the decision as umpires call. Dilshan Madhushanka produced a superb
delivery disturbing timber dismissing Virat Kohli leaving India in trouble.
Rohit Sharma showed intent right from word go putting enough pressure on Lankan
bowlers, especially Ashita Fernando. Surya Kumar Yadav struggled initially. At
the end of the first six overs, India made 44 for 2.
Soon after the field restrictions, Rohit kept the momentum going
with lovely shots while Surya Kumar Yadav looked in decent touch. It was a good
batting display by Rohit Sharma keeping the scoreboard ticking completing fifty
off 32 balls. Rohit took on Hasaranga showed his class making sure that India was
on course for a big total. Chamika Karaunate provided a much-needed breakthrough by dismissing Rohit Sharma with a simple catch to Nissanka. Rohit and Surya Kumar
Yadav added 97 runs for the 3rd wicket. Shanaka was bought into the
attack getting rid of Surya Kumar with a simple catch to Theekshana at short
third man.
Rishabh Pant looked in decent touch hitting 3 boundaries along
with Hardik Pandya showing some intent. Shanaka grabbed the vital wicket as
Nissanka took an excellent catch to dismiss Pandya. Pandya and Pant added 30 runs for
the 5th wicket. Deepak Hooda was given a reprieve as he was caught off
a no-ball for a bouncer. Madhushanka bowled a superb 19th over
taking 2 wickets of Deepak Hooda and Pant.
The Sri Lankan captain Shanaka had to bring fielders inside
the circle due to a slow over-rate. Ravichandran Ashwin provided some vital runs in the final over to help India post 173 for 8 in 20 overs.
Chasing 174 runs to win, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis
started cautiously against Arshdeep Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The Lankan
openers showed putting enough pressure on the Indian bowlers not allowing them
to settle. Mendis and Nissanka looked impressive against Chahal. At the end of the first six overs, Sri Lanka raced away to 57 for 0.
Nissanka looked impressive completing fifty off 33 balls and
kept the pressure on Indian bowlers. Chahal got the breakthrough by dismissing
Nissanka by playing a reverse sweep straight to Rohit Sharma at the backward point.
Nissanka and Mendis added 97 runs for the opening wicket.
Chahal struck again in the same over to dismiss Charith Asalanaka
with a simple catch to Surya Kumar Yadav bringing back India into the game.
Mendis continued his attacking mindset completing fifty off 33 balls. Ashwin
dismissed Gunathilka with a simple catch to KL Rahul at long-off. Chahal proved
his mettle once more to get rid of well-set Kusal Mendis showing his skills.
Pant missed a golden chance of stumping Shanaka. Bhaunka
Rajapaksa and Shanaka kept Sri Lanka’s hopes alive with some lovely shots. Bhuvneshwar
Kumar struggled again in the 19th over giving away 14 runs.
With 7 runs to defend, Arshdeep Singh bowled impressively
not allowing Bhaunka Rajapaksa and Shanaka to score runs quickly. Pant missed a golden
run-out as both Lankan batters took 2 runs from a bye. Both Sri Lankan batters
added unbeaten 64 runs helping Sri Lanka register their 2nd win of
the Super 4 stage.
Sri Lanka 174 for 4 in 19.5 overs ( Kusal Mendis 57,
Nissanka 52, Chahal 3/34, Ashwin 1/32) beat India 173 for 8 in 20 overs ( Rohit
Sharma 72, Surya Kumar Yadav 34, Madhushanka 3/24, Karuanate 2/27) by 6
wickets.
For his unbeaten 33 off 18 balls and 2 for 26, Dasun Shanaka
was named the man of the match award. India will be hoping that Lanka and Afghanistan
beat Pakistan, India beat Afghanistan by a huge margin.
