Zimbabwe register first ever ODI win on Australian soil
The Zimbabwean team created history as they defeated a full-strength Australian side in the 3rd One-day international match played at Townsville on Saturday.
Zimbabwe captain Regis Chakabva won the toss and decided to
field first. The bowlers made use of conditions as Ngavara got the initial
breakthrough dismissing Australian captain Aaron Finch providing an easy catch to
Ryan Burl. Nyauchi dismissed Steve Smith misjudging in front of the stumps to
leave Australia in trouble. David Warner looked in decent touch putting the bad
deliveries away for boundaries.
Brad Evans got rid of Alex Carey with a lovely delivery
providing an easy catch to Chakabva. At the end of the first 10 overs, Australia
looked in trouble at 37 for 3. Warner played with intent keeping the momentum going
for the hosts while Marcus Stoinis struggled against disciplined Zimbabwe
bowling. Evans dismissed Marcus Stoinis to leave Australia in massive trouble.
Warner made the batting look easy and completed fifty off 47 balls.
Sean Williams dismissed Cameron Green providing an easy catch
to Burl at midwicket. Glenn Maxwell and Warner showed intent not allowing the
Zimbabwe bowlers to make further inroads. Both Australian batters looked at ease.
Ryan Burl was introduced into the attack and got a breakthrough dismissing
Maxwell taking the leading edge with a simple return catch to the bowler. Maxwell and
Warner added 57 runs for the 6th wicket. Burl wreaked havoc among
the Australian batting line up dismissing Ashton Agar with a full toss straight
to Madhevere. He then got rid of well-set Warner as Evans took a decent rebound
catch. The leg-spinner then disturbed the timber dismissing Mitchell Starc to
leave Australia on the backfoot.
Burl ended the innings getting rid of Josh Hazlewood with a
review for caught behind. The umpire called it not out but on review, it was
overturned to out as there was an edge. Burl finished with amazing figures of 5
for 10 in 3 overs. Zimbabwe bowlers did a superb job to bowl out Australia for
141.
Chasing 142 runs to win, it was an aggressive start by
Zimbabwe openers as Kaitano and Marumani showed intent against Starc and
Hazlewood. The pitch had bounce and pace, but the openers looked settled. Josh
Hazlewood got the breakthrough by dismissing Kaitano with a good catch by Smith.
Kaitano and Marumani added 38 runs for the opening wicket. At the end of the first 10
overs, Zimbabwe made 44 for 1.
Soon after the field restrictions, Hazlewood got the wicket
of Medherve as Ashton Agar took a good catch at backward point. He then
produced a peach to dismiss Sean Williams to leave Zimbabwe in trouble.
Sikander Raza and Marumani did not look comfortable against the short-pitch stuff
of Australia.
Stoinis did the job of getting rid of Raza providing an easy catch
to Starc at fine leg. Marumani’s disciplined innings ended as he tried to hit a big shot, but Carey took a high catch to leave Zimbabwe on the back foot. Regis
Chakabva and Tony Munyonga played Hazelwood’s over. Both Zimbabwe batters
rotated the strike against Australian bowlers.
Right after the drinks break, Agar dismissed Munyonga to
break the partnership. Chakbava and Munyonga added 38 runs for the 6th
wicket. Chakabva looked confident playing according to the merit-making sure
that Zimbabwe remain on course for a victory. Ryan Burl looked impressive with
2 lovely shots.
Mitchell Starc got rid of Ryan Burl with a simple catch to
Cameron Green at mid-off. Brad Evans hit the winning runs to register a famous
3-wicket win over Australia.
Zimbabwe 142 for 7 in 39 overs (Chakabva 37*, Marumani 35,
Hazlewood 3/30) beat Australia 141 in 31 overs ( Warner 94, Ryan Burl 5/10) by
3 wickets.
For his 5 for 10, Ryan Burl was named the man of the match award. For his 6 wickets, Adam Zampa was named the man of the series award.
Zimbabwe lost the first two ODI Matches by 5 wickets and 8
wickets respectively. It is a historic win for Zimbabwe as they toured
Australia after a gap of 19 years.
The 3-match ODI series was a part of the ICC ODI Super
League tournament which is a qualification round for 50 over World Cup to be
played in 2023.
