England versus Australia 1st T20I: High scoring thriller
The first T20I between arch-rivals England and Australia saw high scoring thriller going down the last ball played at Optus Stadium, Perth on Sunday.
Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to
field first. Jos Buttler showed his class leading from the front right from
word go along with Alex Hales. The England openers put enough pressure on
second-string Australian bowling not allowing them to settle. Buttler played
innovative strokes. At the end of the first six overs, England's openers scored 58
for 0.
After the field restrictions, Buttler and Hales continued to
dominate Australian bowling. Buttler completed fifty off just 25 balls
while Hales smashed half-century off 29 balls leaving the host's bowling
stunned. Nathan Ellis grabbed the breakthrough dismissing Buttler for a superb
knock. Buttler and Hales added 132 runs in 68 balls laying a strong foundation.
The Australian bowlers made a strong comeback in the death
overs keeping lid on England's batting and also taking wickets at regular intervals.
Stokes playing his first T20I match after a long time failed to contribute big
runs. Chris Woakes provided the impetus in the last over to help England go beyond
200. At the end of 20 overs, England posted 208 for 6.
Chasing 209 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for the
hosts as Cameron Green fell cheaply to Reece Topley caught by Buttler. The
umpire gave not out but on review, it was overturned to out as it hit the edge. Warner
and Mitchell Marsh attacked the England bowling lineup with aggressive shots
by Warner. At the end of the first six overs, Australia raced away to 62 for 1.
Adil Rashid went past Mitchell Marsh's defense to end a strong
71 runs stand for the 2nd wicket. Aaron Warner kept going with
aggressive shots completing fifty off 29 balls. Marcus Stoinis joined in with
Warner taking the attack looking comfortable. Wood ended a solid partnership
putting on 53 runs for the 4th wicket.
The match ebbed swung from one side to another. With 16 runs
required to win, Matthew Wade could not finish the match as Sam Curran's wickets
of Wade and Sams helped England register 8 runs win. Mark Wood bowled with pace
troubling the Australian batters in good batting conditions.
England 208 for 6 in 20 overs (Hales 84, Buttler, Buttler
68, Nathan Ellis 3/20) beat Australia 200 for 9 in 20 overs ( Warner 73, Mitchell
Marsh 36, Wood 3/34, Sam Curran 2/35) by 8 runs.
For his 84 off 51 balls and 2 catches, Alex Hales was named
the man of the match award. England takes 1-0 lead in 3-match series.
The second T20I will be played on 12th October at
Manuka Oval, Canberra.
