ICC T20 World Cup 2022 Qualifying round Group B: Zimbabwe proves too strong for Ireland
Zimbabwe began their 2022 ICC T20 World Cup on a winning note as they defeated Ireland easily in the 2nd match of day 2 played at Believre Oval, Hobart on Monday.
Ireland Andrew Balbirnie won the toss and decided to field
first. It was an ideal start as Joshua Little produced a peach to dismiss Regis
Chakabva. Wesley Medherve showed intent with positive strokes putting Ireland's
bowlers under pressure. The captain Craig Ervine struggled against the pace and
bounce of the pitch. Little struck again dismissing dangerous Medherve caught
by Delany. Medherve and Ervine added 37 runs for 2nd wicket.
Simi Singh then dismissed Zimbabwe captain Sean Ervine with an
easy stumping. Sikander Raza came to the crease joining with Sean Williams with
Zimbabwe 41 for 3 at the end of the first six overs.
Raza hit the bad balls away for big shots keeping the
momentum going for Zimbabwe. On other hand, experience Sean Williams struggled.
Simi Singh dismissed Williams caught by Delany. Williams and Raza added 42 runs
for the 4th wicket. Raza hammered the Ireland bowlers completing
fifty off just 26 balls. Milton Shumba and Raza kept the scoreboard ticking
with singles and hitting occasional boundaries.
Adair dismissed Shumba caught at short third man. Shumba and
Raza added 58 runs for the 5th wicket. Ryan Burl could not
contribute many runs. Luke Jongwe and Raza put on vital runs in death overs.
Raza was dismissed off the last delivery with brilliant delivery by Adair. Raza
and Jongwe added 33 runs for the 7th wicket. Zimbabwe posted 174 for
7 at the end of 20 overs.
Chasing 175 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for
Ireland as their star batter Paul Stirling was dismissed by Ngarava taking
inside edge onto the stumps. Ngarava struck for the second time getting rid of
Tucker.
Blessing Muzabrani rattled the Ireland batting getting
wickets of Tector and captain Balbirnie to leave Ireland in trouble. George Dockrell
and Curtis Campher helped Ireland reach 33 for 4 at end of 6 overs.
Campher and Dockrell steadied the ship for Ireland. Sikander
Raza’s day continued with a lovely yorker to dismiss Dockrell. Campher and
Dockrell added 42 runs for the 5th wicket. Gareth Delany and Campher
looked in decent touch before Sean Williams struck again to dismiss Campher.
Delany and Campher. It was one-way traffic for Zimbabwe before Barry McCarthy,
and Joshua Little delayed the proceedings.
Zimbabwe showed their skills as they won the match easily by
31 runs. McCarthy and Little added unbeaten 32 runs for the 10th
wicket.
Zimbabwe 174 for 7 in 20 overs ( Sikander Raza 82, Joshua
Little 3/24) beat Ireland 143 for 9 in 20 overs ( Campher 27, Delany 24,
Muzabrani 3/23) by 31 runs.
For his 82 off 48 balls and 1 for 22, Sikander Raza was
named the man of the match award. Zimbabwe and Scotland registered impressive
wins on the opening day of Group B matches.
