ICC T20 World Cup 2022 qualifying round: Sri Lanka thrash UAE to stay alive in the tournament
The Asian Champions Sri Lanka made a strong comeback into the tournament with dominating win over UAE played at Kardinia Park, Geelong on Monday.
UAE captain
CP Rizwan won the toss and decided to field first. Kusal Mendis and Pathum
Nissanka showed intent right from word go putting pressure on UAE bowlers.
Lankan openers took advantage of big boundaries keeping the scoreboard ticking. Aryan
Lakra got rid of Mendis caught in front of the stumps. Mendis and Nissanka
added 42 runs for the opening wicket.
Dhanajaya
de Silva and Nissanka helped Sri Lanka end the first six overs at 52. Both
Lankan batters kept the momentum going with singles and not allowing UAE
bowlers to settle. UAE struck as Dhanajaya was run out in a mix-up. Dhanajaya
de Silva and Nissanka added 50 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Nissanka
looked steady and made the batting look easy. Karthik Meiyappan created history by becoming the first bowler in this year’s WC to grab a hat trick. He took wickets of
Rajapaksa, Charith Asalanaka, and Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka with a beauty
to leave Lanka in trouble.
Aayan Khan
got rid of Hasranaga with a simple catch to Basil Hameed at long-off. Nissanka
steadied the ship reaching half-century off 45 balls. Nissanka upped the ante with
big shots in the 19th over. Zahoor Khan bowled a stunning 20th
over giving away just 3 runs. He dismissed Nissanka with a lovely catch by
Basil Hameed and then Chamika Karaunate. Nissanka and Karaunate added 30 runs
for the 7th wicket.
Chasing 153
runs to win, Chirag Suri began the innings decently. Chameera rattled the UAE
batting line-up getting rid of Muhammed Waseem taking the inside edge onto the stumps.
Sri Lankan bowlers made life tough for inexperienced UAE batters. At the end of the first six overs, UAE looked in deep trouble at 23 for 4.
It was a
superb bowling effort by Lankan bowlers. Hasranaga grabbed the wicket of Arvind
with a review for LBW. The umpire gave not out but on review, it was overturned
to out. Hasranaga and Theekshana stifled UAE batters. Junaid Siddique enjoyed
himself with the biggest six of 109 m.
Hasranaga
eventually got rid of Aayan after Siddique was dropped twice in the same over.
Chameera hobbled out due to an injury. Theekshana completed the job of getting rid
of Siddique caught by Nissanka helping Lanka resounding 79 runs win.
Sri Lanka
152 for 8 in 20 overs ( Nissanka 74, Karthik Meiyappan 3/18) beat UAE 73 in
17.1 overs ( Aayan Khan 19, Junaid Siddique 18, Chameera 3/15, Hasranaga 3/8)
by 79 runs.
Sri Lanka
upped their net run rate to plus. They would need to win their last game
against Netherlands on 20th October.
For his 74
off 60 balls, Pathum Nissanka was named the man of the match award.
