ICC T20 World Cup qualifying round Group A: Netherlands prevail in a nail-biting finish

Netherlands edge past spirited UAE side in a low-scoring thriller during the 2nd match of ICC T20 World Cup qualifying round played at Kardinia Park, Geelong on Sunday.

UAE captain CP Rizwan won the toss and decided to bat first. Chirag Suri and Muhammed Wasim struggled initially in the first three overs before Wasim showed intent hitting 2 sixes to put some pressure on the Netherlands bowlers. At the end of first six overs, UAE just scored 31 runs.

The experienced Van der Merwe got the breakthrough dismissing Chirag Suri trying to reverse the sweep caught by Scott Edwards. Suri and Waseem added 33 runs for the first wicket. Netherlands bowlers created enough pressure on Kashif Daud and Waseem with disciplined bowling not allowing them to hit runs with ease. Pringle dismissed Daud being bowled. Waseem and wicketkeeper Arvind could not manage boundaries against disciplined Netherlands bowling.

Klassen dismissed well-set Waseem caught by Pringle to leave UAE struggling. Waseem and Arvind added 32 runs for the 3rd wicket. Zawar Farid was run out with lovely throw by Ackermann gathered by Edwards. De Leede grabbed 3 wickets in an over dismissing Arvind, Basil Hameed, and captain CP Rizwan. At the end of 20 overs, UAE posted 111 for 8.

Chasing 112 runs to win, Vikramjit Singh began the innings with lovely shots putting UAE bowlers under pressure. Basil Hameed was bought into attack to get rid of Singh. Max O Dowd showed intent putting UAE spinners under pressure with attacking shots. Junaid Siddique castled O Dowd stumps that kept low making life tough for Netherlands. At the end of the first six overs, Netherlands posted 42 for 2.

Bas de Leede and Ackermann kept the scoreboard ticking taking singles and doubles. A sensational catch by captain CP Rizwan got rid of de Leede. The third umpire checked for catch but eventually gave out. UAE bowlers kept tight lines and lengths not allowing Netherlands batters to score runs easily on a tough batting pitch.

Aayan Afzal Khan grabbed the wicket of Ackermann caught at deep square leg to leave Netherlands in trouble. Junaid Siddique rattled them getting two wickets in an over dismissing Cooper and Van der Merwe to leave the Netherlands in some trouble. Tim Pringle was given a reprieve as CP Rizwan could not grab on the second attempt.

Scott Edwards and Pringle kept the Netherlands on course taking singles and doubles. Zahoor Khan produced a lovely yorker to dismiss Pringle.

UAE fielding did not look up to the mark as they missed few chances. Edwards and Van Beek ensured that Netherlands open their account with 3 wicket win.

Netherlands 112 for 7 in 19.5 overs ( O Dowd 23, Edwards 16*, Junaid Siddique 3/24) beat UAE 111 for 8 in 20 overs ( Muhammed Waseem 41, Bas de Leede 3/19) by 3 wickets

For his 3 for 19 in 3 overs, Bas de Leede was named the man of the match award. Netherlands and Namibia opened their account on opening day.
