ICC T20 World Cup qualifying round Group A: Netherlands prevail in a nail-biting finish
Netherlands edge past spirited UAE side in a low-scoring thriller during the 2nd match of ICC T20 World Cup qualifying round played at Kardinia Park, Geelong on Sunday.
UAE captain CP Rizwan won the toss and decided to bat first.
Chirag Suri and Muhammed Wasim struggled initially in the first three overs before
Wasim showed intent hitting 2 sixes to put some pressure on the Netherlands
bowlers. At the end of first six overs, UAE just scored 31 runs.
The experienced Van der Merwe got the breakthrough
dismissing Chirag Suri trying to reverse the sweep caught by Scott Edwards. Suri
and Waseem added 33 runs for the first wicket. Netherlands bowlers created
enough pressure on Kashif Daud and Waseem with disciplined bowling not allowing
them to hit runs with ease. Pringle dismissed Daud being bowled. Waseem and
wicketkeeper Arvind could not manage boundaries against disciplined Netherlands
bowling.
Klassen dismissed well-set Waseem caught by Pringle to leave
UAE struggling. Waseem and Arvind added 32 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Zawar Farid was run out with lovely throw by Ackermann gathered by Edwards. De
Leede grabbed 3 wickets in an over dismissing Arvind, Basil Hameed, and captain
CP Rizwan. At the end of 20 overs, UAE posted 111 for 8.
Chasing 112 runs to
win, Vikramjit Singh began the innings with lovely shots putting UAE bowlers
under pressure. Basil Hameed was bought into attack to get rid of Singh. Max O
Dowd showed intent putting UAE spinners under pressure with attacking shots.
Junaid Siddique castled O Dowd stumps that kept low making life tough for Netherlands.
At the end of the first six overs, Netherlands posted 42 for 2.
Bas de Leede and Ackermann kept the scoreboard ticking taking
singles and doubles. A sensational catch by captain CP Rizwan got rid of de
Leede. The third umpire checked for catch but eventually gave out. UAE bowlers
kept tight lines and lengths not allowing Netherlands batters to score runs
easily on a tough batting pitch.
Aayan Afzal Khan grabbed the wicket of Ackermann caught at
deep square leg to leave Netherlands in trouble. Junaid Siddique rattled them
getting two wickets in an over dismissing Cooper and Van der Merwe to leave the Netherlands in some trouble. Tim Pringle was given a reprieve as CP Rizwan
could not grab on the second attempt.
Scott Edwards and Pringle kept the Netherlands on course taking
singles and doubles. Zahoor Khan produced a lovely yorker to dismiss Pringle.
UAE fielding did not look up to the mark as they missed few
chances. Edwards and Van Beek ensured that Netherlands open their account with
3 wicket win.
Netherlands 112 for 7 in 19.5 overs ( O Dowd 23, Edwards
16*, Junaid Siddique 3/24) beat UAE 111 for 8 in 20 overs ( Muhammed Waseem 41,
Bas de Leede 3/19) by 3 wickets
For his 3 for 19 in 3 overs, Bas de Leede was named the man
of the match award. Netherlands and Namibia opened their account on opening
day.
