India versus South Africa 1st ODI: South Africa seal tense win in a rain curtailed match
The South African Cricket Team showed their skills against second string Indian side in a rain-curtailed first ODI match played at Ekana International Stadium, Lucknow on Thursday.
After a lot of stoppage due to rain, the match was reduced to
40 overs side. Indian captain Shikhar Dhawan won the toss and decided to field
first. Mohammed Siraj and Avesh Khan troubled Janneman Malan and Quinton de Kock
with the pitch having seam movement. Malan survived close LBW shout given not
out but on review, it was retained as not out due to umpires called. At the end of the first 8 overs, South African openers made 28 for 0.
Janneman Malan was given a reprieve as Shubman Gill dropped
simple chance at slips. Malan and de Kock kept the momentum going for South Africa.
Shardul Thakur got the breakthrough dismissing Janneman Malan caught by Shreyas
Iyer. Malan and de Kock added 49 runs for the opening wicket.
De Kock looked impressive taking on debutant Ravi Bishnoi
putting enough pressure on him. Thakur produced another lovely delivery to
dismiss Temba Bavuma. Kuldeep Yadav sneaked past Aiden Markram's defense leaving
South Africa in trouble at 71 for 3.
De Kock and Klassen showed intent on keeping the scoreboard
ticking. Kuldeep Yadav troubled Klassen and de Kock with his variations. Ravi
Bishnoi got his maiden ODI wicket by getting rid of de Kock trying to sweep. De Kock
and Klassen added 39 runs for the 4th wicket. Klassen and Miller
kept the pressure on Indian bowlers, especially Bishnoi.
Klassen and Miller looked at ease not allowing the Indian
bowlers to settle. Miller continued his impressive form completing fifty off 50
balls while Klassen reached half-century off 52 balls. The Indian catching and
fielding was not great. Both South African batters took the charge putting enough
pressure on the inexperienced Indian bowling. Miller and Klassen added unbeaten
139 runs for the 5th wicket. At the end of 40 overs, South Africa
posted 249 for 4.
Chasing 250 runs to win, was not an ideal start for the Indian team as Shubman Gill could not contribute many runs bowled by Rabada.
Parnell dismissed Dhawan taking an inside edge onto the stumps to leave the Indian
team in trouble. Ruturaj Gaikwad making his ODI debut struggled. At the end of the first 8 overs, India could only score 18 runs for loss of 2 wickets.
Ruturaj Gaikwad struggled with his timing along with Ishan
Kishan. South African bowlers kept it tight not allowing Gaikwad and Kishan to
score runs easily. Shamsi ended the innings for Gaikwad with a simple stumping by
Gaikwad. Gaikwad and Kishan added 40 runs for 3rd wicket. Soon
after, Kishan also fell caught by Malan leaving India in big trouble.
Shreyas Iyer came to the crease and showed intent putting
enough pressure on SA bowling with counterattacking innings. On other hand, Sanju
Samson gave most of the strike to Iyer. Iyer completed his fifty off 33 balls.
Lungi Ngidi grabbed the important breakthrough dismissing Shreyas with shorter delivery
caught by Rabada at mid-on. Shreyas and Samson added 67 runs for the 5th
wicket.
Shardul Thakur and Sanju Samson provided the impetus with the required
run rate climbing all the time. Samson looked in impressive touch taking on SA
bowlers making life tough for Bavuma. Thakur also played impressive hand
hitting lovely shots keeping India alive.
Samson completed fifty off 49 balls and looked in decent
touch. Ngidi grabbed the important wicket of Thakur caught by Keshav Maharaj at
mid-off. Thakur and Samson added 93 runs for the 6th wicket. Ngidi
then took the wicket of Kuldeep Yadav with decent catch by Bavuma.
Samson was not given a strike in the 39th over as
Avesh Khan tried to smash big shots. Rabada eventually took the wicket of Avesh. He
then dismissed Ravi Bishnoi but called no ball for overstepping.
With 30 runs required off the final over, Samson produced an onslaught against struggling Shamsi smashing him for 21 runs but South Africa
held onto his nerves to win the match by 9 runs.
South Africa 249 for 4 in 40 overs ( Miller 75*, Klassen
74*, Thakur 2/35) beat India 240 for 8 in 40 overs ( Samson 86*, Shreyas Iyer
50, Ngidi 3/52, Rabada 2/36) by 9 runs via DLS method.
With this win, South Africa earned important points in the
ICC ODI Super League tournament for direct qualification for World Cup 2023.
For his unbeaten 74, Klassen was named the man of the match award. South Africa takes a 1-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series. The 2nd ODI will be played at JSCA Stadium, Ranchi on 9th October.
