India versus South Africa 2nd ODI: Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan knocks help India level the series
The Indian Cricket Team returned from a narrow defeat to win the 2nd One-day international match played at JSCA Stadium, Ranchi on Sunday.
South Africa's stand-in captain Keshav Maharaj won the toss
and decided to bat first. Mohammed Siraj got an early breakthrough dismissing
Quinton de Kock taking an inside edge onto the stumps. Janneman Malan and Reeza
Hendricks showed intent in putting pressure on Indian bowlers. Shahbaz Ahmed
playing his debut ODI grabbed the wicket of Janneman Malan via review for LBW.
The umpires called not out but Dhawan reviewed the decision and it was overturned
to out. Janneman Malan and Hendricks added 33 runs for 2nd wicket.
At the end of the first 10 overs, South Africa 40 for 2.
Hendricks and Markram looked in sublime touch showing intent
against pacers and spinners. Both batters did not allow the hosts bowlers to
settle with lovely shots. Hendricks playing his first match this tour looked
solid completing fifty off 58 balls. Markram was given out by the umpire but on
review, it was overturned to not out as there was no edge. Markram kept the momentum
going completing half-century off 64 balls.
Siraj was bought into the attack and dismissed Reeza Hendricks
providing simple catch to Shahbaz Ahmed at deep midwicket. Hendricks and Markram
added 129 runs for the 3rd wicket. Heinrich Klassen came to the
crease showing intent right from word go. Markram kept the momentum going with
aggressive hits along with Klassen. Kuldeep Yadav deceived Klassen as Siraj
took a diving catch at long-on. Klassen and Markram added 46 runs for the 4th
wicket.
Washington Sundar dismissed the other well-set batter Markram
with a good catch by Dhawan to leave South Africa on backfoot. The Indian bowlers
did not allow Wayne Parnell and David Miller to score runs easily. Shardul Thakur
dismissed Wayne Parnell caught by Shreyas Iyer at long-on. Miller and Parnell
added 41 runs for the 6th wicket.
The Indian pacers kept South Africa at bay, especially David
Miller, and kept brakes on the scoring rate. Siraj shattered the stumps of
Keshav Maharaj to get his 3rd wicket. It was a superb bowling effort
as India restricted South Africa to 278 for 7 in 50 overs.
Chasing 279 runs to win, Shubman Gill looked in brilliant
touch hitting the shots well. Kagiso Rabada provided breakthrough dismissing
Gill with a lovely return catch. Dhawan’s poor form continued as he was bowled by
Wayne Parnell. Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan steadied the ship with positive shots.
At the end of the first 10 overs, India scored 55 for 2.
Shreyas Iyer and Kishan looked in great touch against top-quality
bowling attack. They did not allow the South African bowlers to settle with dew
setting in. Kishan took the attack to spinners while Shreyas kept the momentum
going.
Kishan completed fifty off 60 balls while Shreyas Iyer
reached half-century off 48 balls. Shreyas and Kishan never allowed the South
African bowlers to make use of the conditions. Fortuin eventually got rid of
Kishan providing a simple catch to Hendricks. Kishan and Shreyas added 161 runs
in quick time allowing India on course for a comfortable win.
Sanju Samson impressed with his shot making while Shreyas
Iyer completed his 2nd ODI century off 103 balls. Samson and Shreyas
Iyer ensured that India won the match with ease. Both batters added unbeaten 73
runs for the 4th wicket.
India 282 for 3 in 45.5 overs ( Shreyas Iyer 113, Ishan
Kishan 93, Wayne Parnell 1/44) beat South Africa 278 for 7 in 50 overs ( Markram
79, Hendricks 74, Siraj 3/38) by 7 wickets.
For his unbeaten 113 off 111 balls, Shreyas Iyer was named the
man of the match award. India leveled the ODI series at 1-1.
The third and deciding ODI will be played at Arun Jaitley
Stadium, New Delhi on 11th October.
