Women’s Asia Cup 2022: Indian women thrash Bangladesh to inch close for semi-final spot

 The Indian women’s team fought back as they defeated hosts Bangladesh in a one-sided contest to reach the semi-finals spot played at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Sylhet on Saturday.

Indian stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana won the toss and decided to bat first. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma played with intent right from the word go putting enough pressure on Bangladeshi bowling. Mandhana kept momentum for the Indian team with 3 boundaries in an over and did not allow the Bangladeshi bowlers to settle. Shafali Verma returned to the squad with massive shots keeping the scoreboard with ease. At the end of the first six overs, the Indian openers scored 59 for 0.

The Indian openers continued their merry way showing intent and not allowing Bangladeshi bowlers to settle. Mandhana was run out in a mix-up with Verma. Mandhana and Verma added 96 runs for the opening wicket laying a strong foundation for a solid total. Verma completed fifty off 40 balls while Jemimah Rodrigues looked cautious. Rumana Ahmed impressed with her bowling grabbing the wicket of Shafali Verma struggling with her timing after completing a fifty. Richa Ghosh was promoted at 4 but Rumana Ahmed got wickets of Ghosh and Navgire to stall India’s progress.

Jemimah Rodrigues continued her impressive form with aggressive shots putting on 29 runs for the 5th wicket. At the end of 20 overs, Indian women posted 159 for 5.

Chasing 160 runs to win, Murshida Khatun and Fargana Haque looked impressive with their strokes against disciplined Indian bowling. Both Bangladesh openers kept the scoreboard ticking to end the first six overs at 30 for 0.

Sneha Rana got the breakthrough dismissing Murshida Khatun with a simple catch to Mandhana. Murshida and Fargana added 45 runs for the opening wicket. The captain Nigar Sultana looked impressive, but the Indian bowlers kept a tight leash on Bangladeshi batters. It was an impressive performance as India restricted the hosts to 100 for 7 in 20 overs giving them a 59-run win.

Indian women 159 for 5 in 20 overs ( Shafali Verma 55, Mandhana 47, Rumana Ahmed 3/27) beat Bangladesh women 100 for 7 in 20 overs ( Nigar Sultana 36, Shafali Verma 2/10, Deepti Sharma 2/13) by 59 runs.

For her 55 off 44 balls and 2 for 10, Shafali Verma was awarded the player of the match. They will play their last fixture against Thailand.
