Women’s Asia Cup 2022: Thailand creates massive upset to defeat Pakistan

It was a memorable moment for Thailand's Women’s team as they defeat higher ranked Pakistan side in the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 tournament played at Sylhet International Ground on Thursday.

Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof won the toss and decided to bat first. Muneeba Ali and Sidra Ameen looked in decent touch showing intent before Putthawong got rid of the wicketkeeper Muneeba. Thailand bowlers kept it tight not allowing Sidra and Bismah to score runs easily. At the end of the first six overs, Pakistan women made 33 for 1.

The pressure crept on the Pakistan batters thanks to disciplined Thailand bowling. Pakistan captain Maroof was run out of free hit as she tried running a non-existent single of Maya. Sidra Ameen looked steady enough while Nida Dar struggled to time the ball. Both Pakistani batters were never allowed to run away with the game.

Tippoch provided the much-needed breakthrough by getting rid of Dar caught by Kanoh at long-on. Dar and Ameen added 41 runs for the 3rd wicket. Ameen completed fifty off 61 balls and looked enough. Ayesha Naseem's drop catch did not cost much as she was bowled by Tippoch. Sidra Ameen was run out in the final over tyring to take second run for well-made 56. At the end of 20 overs, Pakistan made 116 for 5.

Chasing 117 runs to win, Natthankan Chantam and Koncharoenaki provided a decent start for Thailand showing intent. Chantam looked impressive with her intent to put the bad deliveries away for boundaries. At the end of the first six overs, Thailand's openers made 30 for 0.

Tuba Hassan struck twice in one over dismissing Koncharoenkai and Chanida Sutthiruang to bring back Pakistan into the game. Chantham looked in decent touch taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries to keep Thailand on course for a huge upset.

Thailand captain Chaiwai showed intent keeping the scoreboard ticking along with Chantam. Kainat Imtiaz dismissed Chaiwai with a lovely catch by Muneeba Ali to break a solid partnership of 42 runs for the 3rd wicket. Tippoch also went trying to hit a big shot caught by Omaima Sohail.

Chantam played a lovely hand completing her fifty off 45 balls. Maya could not contribute many runs as she was stumped by Muneeba Ali. Dar grabbed the wicket of well-set Chantam caught by Sidra Ameen to shift the momentum in favor of Pakistan.

With 10 runs required off the final over, Kanoh and Boochantam kept their nerves to help Thailand create a massive upset.

Thailand 117 for 6 in 19.5 overs ( Chantam 61, Tuba Hassan 2/18, Nida Dar 2/26) beat Pakistan 116 for 5 in 20 overs ( Sidra Ameen 56, Tippoch 2/20) by 4 wickets.

For her 61 off 51 balls, Chantam was awarded the player of the match. With this win, Thailand registers its first win in the Women’s Asia Cup 2022.
