Super 12 Group 1: England defeat New Zealand to stay alive in the tournament

 The England Cricket Team registered a commanding win over table topper New Zealand to stay alive in the tournament played at the Gabba, Brisbane on Tuesday.

England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and decided to bat first. Jos Buttler put the pressure right from word go putting Kiwi bowlers under pressure while Hales kept hitting shots with ease. Buttler was given a reprieve as Kane Williamson could not hold the catch as the umpire decided to go with the third umpire.

The third umpire changed the decision to not out. Buttler and Hales kept the momentum going for England hitting shots easily. At the end of the first six overs, England's openers scored 48 without losing any wickets.

Buttler and Hales looked in great touch keeping the scoreboard ticking. Hales completed fifty off 39 putting enough pressure on Kiwis bowling. Santer deceived Hales with a simple stumping to end 81 runs opening the partnership laying a strong foundation for a big total. Moeen Ali was promoted to number 3 but could not contribute many runs caught by Boult.

Buttler showed his class by completing fifty off 35 balls. He showed intent on keeping the pressure on Kiwi pacers. Liam Livingstone demonstrated hitting abilities to keep the momentum going for England. Lockie Ferguson shattered the stumps as England tried hitting big shots. Livingstone and Buttler added 45 runs for the 3rd wicket.

A superb piece of fielding by Williamson and a great gather by Southee resulted in the run out of Buttler. England posted 179 for 5 at the end of 20 overs.

Chasing 180 runs to win, a lovely catch by Buttler ended Conway’s innings. Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid started the innings for England. Finn Allen showed some intent against disciplined England before fell to Sam Curran caught at deep midwicket by Stokes. At the end of the first six overs, New Zealand made 40 for 2.

Mark Wood bowled with pace and created enough pressure on New Zealand batters, especially Kane Williamson. Moeen Ali dropped a sitter getting rid of Glenn Phillips. On other hand, Williamson struggled with his timing. Phillips attacked the England bowling, especially Adil Rashid, and completed fifty off 25 balls.

Stokes was bought into the attack and eventually dismissed Kane Williamson caught by Adil Rashid at short third man. Williamson and Phillips added 91 runs for the 3rd wicket. The England pace bowlers with Mark Wood, Woakes, and Curran bowled with accuracy in death overs as they won the match by 20 runs.

England 179 for 5 in 20 overs ( Buttler 72, Hales 52, Ferguson 2/45) beat New Zealand 159 for 8 in 20 overs ( Phillips 62, Williamson 40, Curran 2/26, Woakes 2/33) by 20 runs.

For his 73 off 47 balls, Jos Buttler was named the player of the match award. With this win, England moved to the second spot with 5 points. They play their last Super 12 match against Sri Lanka.
