Super 12 Group 1: Sri Lanka knock Afghanistan out of the tournament with an easy win
The Sri Lankan Cricket Team produced a dominating performance as they defeated Afghanistan in a do-or-die encounter played at the Gabba, Brisbane on Tuesday.
Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi won the toss and decided
to bat first. Rahmatullah Gurbaz showed intent putting pressure on Lankan
bowlers right from the word go while Usman Ghani struggled. Lahiru Kumara got
breakthrough dismissing dangerous Gurbaz with a stunning delivery shattering
the stumps. At the end of the first six overs, Afghanistan openers made 42 for 0.
Soon after the field restrictions got over, Lahiru Kumara shattered
Gurbaz's stumps to give Lankan team breakthrough. Gurbaz and Ghani added 42 runs
for the opening wicket. Lankan bowlers kept a check on Ibrahim Zadran and Ghani not
able to rotate the strike. Hasranaga dismissed Ghani with a simple catch to
Shanaka at the boundary.
Lankan bowlers kept a tight lid on the Afghanistan batters
despite poor fielding effort. Lahiru Kumara dismissed Ibrahim Zadran with a
regulation catch to Rajapaksa. Dhanajaya de Silva grabbed the wicket of
Najibullah Zadran caught by Hasranaga at long-off. Hasranaga was given the final
over and did a superb job getting the wickets of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
At the end of 20 overs, Afghanistan made 144 for 8 in 20 overs.
Chasing 145 runs to win, Pathum Nissanka showed glimpses of
shots before Mujeeb Ur Rahman produced a beauty getting rid of dangerous
Nissanka. The Afghanistan bowlers kept it tight not allowing Kusal Mendis and Dhanajaya
de Silva to score runs easily. At the end of the first six overs, Sri Lanka scored just
28 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Mendis and Dhanajaya de Silva
upped the ante hitting boundaries. Rashid Khan got wicket in his first over
getting rid of Kusal Mendis taking the top edge straight to Gurbaz. Mendis and
Dhanajaya de Silva added 34 runs for the 2nd wicket. Dhanajaya de
Silva looked in sublime touch putting pressure on Afghanistan bowlers.
Dhanajaya de Silva and Asalanaka showed intent against
Rashid Khan keeping the asking required run rate under check. Rashid Khan
finally dismissed Asalanaka. Asalanaka and Dhanajaya added 54 runs for the 3rd
wicket.
Dhanajaya looked in great touch completing fifty off 36
balls. Mujeeb Ur Rahman dismissed Bhanuka Rajapaksa caught by Gurbaz. Dhanajaya
and Rajapaksa added 42 runs for the 4th wicket. Dhanajaya hit the
winning runs with a boundary to help Sri Lanka win it by 6 wickets.
Sri Lanka 148 for 4 in 18.3 overs ( Dhanajaya de Silva 66*,
Rashid Khan 2/31, Mujeeb Ur Rahman 2/24) beat Afghanistan 144 for 8 in 20 overs
( Gurbaz 28, Hasranaga 3/13, Kumara 2/30) by 6 wickets.
For his figures of 3 for 13 in 4 overs, Hasranaga was named
the player of the match award. With this win, Sri Lanka moved to 4 points. They
will play their last Super 12 fixture against England.
