Singapore Open 2023 Day 1: Disappointing day for Indian shuttlers

 

The Indian shuttlers had a disappointing as only 3 of them progressed into the 2nd round of Super 750 Singapore Open on 6 June 2023.

Kidambi Srikanth defeated Wangchareon of Thailand in two straight games. The first game saw Thai player began on aggressive note taking 5-0 lead before the Indian showed great spirit to level the scores. At the mid-game interval, Wangchareon had slender 11-10 lead. After the break, Srikanth proved too strong for the opponent, winning the first game easily at 21-15.

The second game saw this time, Srikanth began well before both players fought for each point. At the break, Wangchareon led 11-10. Both players kept with each other but the Indian played aggressive badminton to win it by 21-19 to move into the second round. He will now face qualifier Lee C H of Chinese Taipei.

Pranshu Rajawat produced an impressive performance defeating higher ranked Kenta Tsuynmena of Japan in two straight games. The young Indian dominated his opponent winning it by 21-12, 21-15 to move into the second round. He will now face Kodai Naraoka in the second round.

HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen lost in their first-round matches. Prannoy lost to Japan Kodai Naroka in two straight games by 15-21, 19-21. The Indian struggled in the first game before producing spirited performance in the second game before losing the match.

Lakshya Sen went down fighting to Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in three games. Sen showed his class winning the first game by 21-18 before losing the next two games by 17-21, 13-21 to be knocked out of tournament. It was a disappointing performance by Sen who reached the semi-finals of Thailand Open.

PV Sindhu’s poor performance continued as he went down fighting to Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in three games. The first game saw Sindhu come back from 3-5 down taking 5 points to take 8-5 lead and took decent lead at the mid-game interval. After the break, Sindhu ensured that she did not allow Yamaguchi to make a mini comeback and Indian won first game 21-18.

The second game Yamaguchi starting on an aggressive note taking 8-4 lead. Sindhu made a strong comeback into the match with lovely shots putting the Japanese under pressure. At the mid-game interval, Sindhu had slender 11-10 lead at interval. After the break, Yamaguchi played with aggression and won the second game by 21-19 to force game into decider.

Yamaguchi looked in complete control right from the start in the 3rd and deciding game. Sindhu fought back strongly as the Japanese took 11-8 lead at the break. The Indian tried her best, but Yamaguchi showed her experience winning third game 21-17. It was Sindhu’s second successive first round loss after losing to Mitchell Li at the Thailand Open.

Saina Nehwal lost to Ratchnok Intanon of Thailand in two straight games by 13-21, 15-21. It was a disappointing performance by Saina who looked out of color against the experienced Thai player.

Akarshi Kashyap lost in two straight games to Sathinda Katethong of Thailand in two straight games by 17-21, 9-21.

The men’s doubles pairing of Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun defeated L Corvee and R Labar of France in two straight games. It was an impressive performance by the young Indian pairing winning it by 21-16, 21-15 to move into the second round. They will face Ben Lane and Sean Vandy of England in the next round.

Satwik/Chirag Shettty and Tressa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand will play their first-round matches on 7 June 2023.
