Thailand Open Day 3: Lakshya Sen and Kiran George progress into quarterfinals
The Indian
shuttlers had a mixed day on the 3rd day as Lakshya Sen and Kiran
George progress into the quarterfinals of Super 500 Thailand Open 2023 played
in Bangkok, Thailand on 1 June.
Kiran
George produced a brilliant performance against Weng Hong of China winning it
in two straight games. Both players started the game on even keel fighting for
each point. At the mid-game break, the Indian had a 11-9 lead. After the break,
Kiran George looked in fine touch and put opponent under pressure with smashes
and drop shots, winning the first game easily at 21-11.
The second
game began with both players fighting for each point. Both players showed their
class with smashes and making life tough. At the mid-game break, Weng Hong had
a slender 11-10 lead. After the break, the match ebbed and flowed from one end
to another before Kiran George won the second game by 21-19 to move into the
quarterfinals. He will now face Thomas Junior Popov in the quarterfinals.
Lakshya Sen
defeated Li Feng of China in two straight games. It was a dominating
performance by Sen putting pressure on the Chinese winning by 21-17, 21-15. He
will now face another qualifier Leong J H of Malaysia.
Saina
Nehwal lost to He Bingjao of China in two straight games by 11-21, 14-21. It
was a disappointing performance by the Indian.
Asmita
Chaila gave a good fight before losing to Carolina Marin in two straight games.
Chaila lost the first game by 18-21 while could not create pressure on former
Olympic Champion Marin losing by 13-21 to be knocked out.
The men’s
doubles pairing of SatwikRankiReddy and Chirag Shetty lost to Fikri and Maulana
of Indonesia in three games. It was a very close fought first game as it went
right down the wire before the Indian pairing won it by 26-24.
Fikri and
Maulana made a strong comeback to win the next two games by 21-11, 21-17 to knock
the Indian pair out of the tournament.
Kiran George
and Lakshya Sen are the two Indians left in the tournament. Both players would
be looking to continue their impressive form and reach semi-finals.
