Paris Olympics 2024: India Clinch Historic Medal
The Indian
Men’s hockey clinched a historic bronze medal in a thrilling contest against
Spain played in Paris on 8th August 2024.
It was an
aggressive start for both teams gauging each other’s defense. Sukhjeet Singh
missed a golden chance to convert it into a goal. Manpreet got injured as
Harmanpreet Singh hit a forceful shot. At the end of the first quarter, the score
remained 0-0.
Spain began
the second quarter on a good note earning a penalty stroke. Marc Miralles
converted it into a goal in the 18th minute to give a 1-0 lead. Spain
earned two back-to-back penalty corners. They maintained the pressure with
aggressive moves keeping the pressure on the Indian defense. Harmanpreet Singh
converted a penalty corner in the 30th minute to level the scores at 1-1.
India began
the third quarter on a good move with Harmanpreet Singh converting his second
penalty corner in the 33rd minute to give India a 2-1 lead. Spain
put pressure on the Indian defense with a penalty corner who cleared the shot
away. Indian then put attack with a short corner which was well saved by the Spanish
goalkeeper. It was end-to-end hockey for both teams but could not yield any
goals. At the end of the third quarter, the scores remained 2-1 in favor of
India.
The fourth
quarter saw starting with a penalty corner. The Spain forwards showed attacking
moves with penalty corners. Sukhjeet Singh was awarded a green for the second time
in this match. Indian defense remained solid and never allowed Spain any
chances. P Sreejesh was superb with his saves in his last match for Team India.
Spain got a
few more penalty corners in the dying minutes, but P Sreejesh remained denied
them. The Indian team celebrated with joy defending the Tokyo Olympics bronze
medal.
The Indian
men’s hockey team produced lovely performances in the Paris Olympics 2024. They
finished 2nd in the pool stage winning 3-2 against New Zealand, 1-1
draw against Argentina, 2-0 win over Ireland, stunning Australia 3-2. Their
only loss came against 1-2 against Belgium.
The
quarterfinals against Great Britain were amazing performance with Amit Rohidas getting
a red card and the Indian team playing with 10 players. P Sreejesh stood tall
with a 4-2 victory in shootouts.
They missed
the services of Amit Rohidas in the semi-finals losing to Germany. Despite
coming back at 2-2, they conceded a goal six minutes before the hooter.
