Paris Olympics: Indian Reach Semi-finals in a thrilling match
The Indian men’s hockey team showed their fighting spirit to reach the semi-finals in a thrilling encounter against Great Britain played in Paris on 4th August 2024.
Great Britain began the first quarter on a positive note
with an attack. They earned two penalty corners in succession but the shot was well
saved by Sreejesh. Sreejesh produced another lovely save from Sorbsy. After the
initial attack, India earned three penalty corners. Payne saved the last shot well. At the end of the first quarter, the scores remained 0-0.
Amit Rohidas was awarded a red card meaning India was one man short for the match. Great Britain earned a penalty corner which was
well saved by Sreejesh. After the save, India did a counter-attack as Abhishek
missed a shot. Harmanpreet Singh scored from a superb penalty corner in the 22nd
minute to give India a 1-0 lead. Great Britain earned another PC. Lee Morton
scored from a rebound save by P Sreejesh in the 27th minute to level
scores at 1-1. At the end of the first half, both teams ended at 1-1.
The third quarter began with Great Britain putting on attacking
moves which was saved by the Indian defence. P Sreejesh produced another superb
save from the penalty corner. Great Britain attacked keeping consistent pressure on
Indian defence. Despite Great Britain's efforts, the scores remained 1-1. Sumit
was awarded a green card in the dying minutes of the third quarter.
Shipperley was awarded a green card which meant 2 minute
suspension. P Sreejesh produced a few more saves that denied Great Britain the winning
goal. It was a superb save by the Indian defense. The match ended with a 1-1
scoreline at the end of the fourth quarter.
The penalty shootout began with James Albury and Harmanpreet
Singh scoring to level the scores at 1-1. Wallace and Sukhjeet converted their
next shots with the scoreline at 2-2.
Conor Williamson missed the shot as it went above the goalpost.
Lalit scored to allow India a 3-2 lead. P Sreejesh produced another superb save from
Rooper's shot. Rajkumar Pal converted to make it 4-2 in favor of India making a
memorable match.
It was an amazing encounter between India and Great Britain.
India played with 10 men for most of the match. They will now play the winner
of Germany and Argentina.
