Paris Olympics: Lakshya Sen Creates History

 

Lakshya Sen becomes the first male player to reach the semi-finals of Olympics history. He achieved this milestone defeating 11th seed Chou Tien Chen in three games played in Paris on 2nd August 2024.

The match started with both players taking alternate points. It ebbed and flowed with lovely shots keeping the momentum going. Chou Tien Chen took an 11-9 lead at the break. After the interval, the match continued to provide entertainment with smashes and drop shots that kept both players on their toes.  The Chinese Taipei held onto his nerves to win the first game 21-19.

Lakshya Sen began the second game on a positive note with a 4-1 lead. Chou then made a strong comeback to level scores at 4-4. The match ebbed and flowed with both players taking alternate points. At the mid-game interval, Sen took an 11-9 lead. After the break, the match continued to entertain at 13-13. The Indian showed great fighting spirit to put enough pressure on the Chinese Taipei player winning it by 21-15.

The third and deciding game was an exciting start before Lakshya Sen showed his array of strokes with smashes and drop shots. At the mid-game interval, Sen had 11-6 lead. After the break, the Indian looked more agile with his smashes and put Chou under immense pressure.

Sen played an excellent game of badminton winning the third game by 21-12 to etch history in Indian badminton. He becomes the first Indian male player to reach the semi-finals of the Olympics. Kidambi Srikanth and Kashyap reached the quarterfinals.

Sen had performed brilliantly in the entire tournament so far despite Kevin Cordon's match getting deleted. He produced a dominating win over 3rd seeded Jonathan Christie in two straight games. His performance stepped up winning against HS Prannoy easily to qualify for the quarterfinals.
