WI vs SA 2nd Test 1st Day: Bowlers Dominate Proceedings

The bowlers had a great outing on the first day of the 2nd test match between West Indies and South Africa at Providence Stadium, Guyana on 15th August 2024. This is an important test match for both teams in the 2023-25 ICC Test championship cycle after the first test ended in a draw.

South African captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start for the visitors as Zorzi stumps were shattered by Jayden Seales. Shamar Joseph struck twice in the same over-getting the wickets of Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma to leave visitors struggling. Tristian Stubbs and David Bedingham steadied the ship for South Africa before Jason Holder struck to dismiss Stubbs with a stunning catch by Kevin Hodge. Stubbs and Bedingham added 37 runs for the 4th wicket. South Africa went into the lunch break at 64 for 4.

After the lunch break, the West Indies pace bowlers destroyed the South African batting order. Shamar Joseph got the big wicket of Bedingham with a peach. Jayden Seales also took important wickets to leave South Africa in deep trouble at 97 for 9. Dane Pidet and Nandie Burger showed resistance against disciplined West Indies bowling.

After superb resistance, Burger was dismissed by Gudakesh Motie. Burger and Pidet added 63 runs for the final wicket. South Africa recovered from 97 for 7 to 160 all out as Pidet remained not out on 38. The play extended as the last wicket added resistance.

The left-arm pace bowler Nandie Burger got off to a perfect start for South Africa getting rid of Louis in his first over. South African bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals not scoring runs easily. The experienced Jason Holder showed some valuable resistance along with Gudakesh Motie. Both looked in good touch before Motie was dismissed right before the close of play. Motie and Holder put on 41 runs for the 7th wicket.

West Indies ended the first day at 97 for 7. For South Africa, Mulder took 4 for 18 while Burger took 2, Maharaj 1 wicket. Holder is still not out on 33.

West Indies 97 for 7 in 28.2 overs (Jason Holder 33*, Keacy Carty 26, Mulder 4/18) trail South Africa160 in 54 overs (Pidet 38*, Shamar Joseph 5/33) by 63 runs.
