Eng vs SL 2nd Test 4th Day: England Seal The Series
The England
Cricket Team registered a dominating win in the 2nd Test match
against Sri Lanka on the 4th day played at Lords, London on 1st
September 2024.
Starting on
the overnight score of 53 for 2, Prabath Jayasuriya was sent as nightwatchman
while Dimuth Karaunate looked confident. Joe Root dropped a tough chance to
dismiss the veteran Karaunate. Chris Woakes got the breakthrough dismissing
Jayasuriya caught by Brook at slips. Karaunate and Mathews looked confident
against disciplined England bowling.
Karaunate reached
fifty off 98 deliveries while Mathews looked solid with his defensive technique.
Olly Stone dismissed Karaunate with a sharp bouncer caught by Ollie Smith. Karaunate
and Mathews added 55 runs for the 4th wicket. Dinesh Chandimal looked
confident with his strokes while Mathews remained solid. At the end of the first
session, Sri Lanka made 136 for 4.
After the lunch
break, Dinesh Chandimal kept the momentum going for Sri Lanka with of
boundaries reaching fifty off just 42 deliveries. Shoaib Bashir struck to dismiss
Mathews providing a simple catch to Woakes. Chandimal and Mathews added 59 runs
for the 5th wicket. Sri Lanka lost two more quick wickets of
Chandimal and Kamindu Mendis to leave the visitors in trouble at 200 for 7.
Dhananjaya de
Silva and Milne Rathyanke kept the scoreboard ticking with positive strokes not
allowing the England bowlers to settle. It was a superb batting display by both
Lankan batters. Sri Lanka ended the 2nd session at 260 for 7.
England
captain Ollie Pope took the 2nd new ball immediately. Dhananjaya completed
his fifty off 68 balls. Atkinson produced a beauty to dismiss the Lankan
captain. Dhananjaya and Rathnayake added 73 runs for the 8th wicket.
Woakes ended the innings by getting rid of Lahiru Kumara caught by Ollie Stone.
England bundled out Sri Lanka for 292 to win the match by 190 runs.
For his
all-round efforts with 118 and 7 wickets including 5 wicket haul in 2nd
innings, Gus Atkinson was named the player of the match award.
England
takes a 2-0 lead in the 3-match Test series. The third and final test match will
be played from 6th September onwards at Kennington Oval, London.

54.3 overs (Root 103, Kumara 3/53, Ashita Fernando 3/52) beat Sri Lanka 196 in 55.3
overs (Kamindu Mendis 74, Chris Woakes 2/21, Potts 2/19) and 292 in 86.4 overs (Dinesh
Chandimal 58, Dhananjaya de Silva 50, Atkinson 5/62) by 190 runs.
