Eng vs SL 3rd Test 1st Day: Ollie Pope and Duckett Knocks Puts England In Strong Position

 

England ended rain curtailed 1st day of the 3rd test match against Sri Lanka in a strong position played at Kennington Oval, London on 6th September 2024.

Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva won the toss and decided to field first. Ashita Fernando and Vishwa Fernando began off with disciplined lines and lengths before Duckett showed putting Lankan bowlers under immense pressure. Lahiru Kumara struck dismissing Lawrence caught by Nissanka by gully. Lawrence and Duckett added 45 runs for the opening wicket.

Ollie Pope looked in good touch with positive strokes against Kumara. Pope and Duckett maintained the momentum for England keeping the scoreboard ticking. Duckett reached his fifty off 48 deliveries before rain and bad light stopped play. England ended the first session at 76 for 1 with only 15 overs being bowled.

After a long delay due to a rain break, the match began with both Duckett and Pope showing their domination against Lankan bowlers. Duckett showed his intent against Kumara with innovative shots before being dismissed trying with the same shot caught by Chandimal. Duckett survived a close LBW shout given not out, on review the decision remained due to the umpires’ call. Duckett and Pope added 95 runs for the 2nd wicket.

The pitch had a lot of seam movement as Lankan pace bowlers could not put deliveries in a particular spot. Ollie Pope looked solid reaching fifty off 58 balls. After lots of struggle, Kumara got Root with a short ball caught by Vishwa Fernando at fine leg. Root and Pope added 51 runs for the 3rd wicket. Ollie Pope looked in great touch with some lovely shots keeping scoreboard ticking. England went into the tea break at 194 for 3.

After the tea break, Ollie Pope made the batting look easy keeping the scoreboard ticking to reach a century off 102 balls while Harry Brook tried to attack Lankan bowlers. England ended the first day in a strong position at 221 for 3 with bad light stopped play.
