Eng vs SL 3rd Test 2nd Day: Great Fightback By Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan Cricket Team made a strong comeback with superb effort with both ball and bat on the 2nd day of the 3rd test at Kennington Oval, London on 7th September 2024.

Starting the day on 221 for 3, Harry Brook struggled against a disciplined Lankan pace bowling unit. Brook was given out by the umpire; on review it was overturned to not out as there was no edge. He finally perished with a sharp catch by Kamindu Mendis caught at extra cover. Brook and Pope added 70 runs for the 4th wicket.

Ollie Pope survived some anxious moments with catches going through gaps. Ollie Pope reached his 150 off 151 deliveries. He was given out by the umpire; on review, it was overturned to not out as it was pitching outside leg. Jamie Smith’s innings ended with a sharp catch to Kusal Mendis at midwicket. The Sri Lankan captain bought himself on getting two quick wickets of Chris Woakes with a good catch by Rathnayake. He dismissed Gus Atkinson with a high catch by Rathnayake at deep midwicket.

In the very next over, Pope was caught by Karaunate at deep square leg. Ashita Fernando got rid of debutant Josh Hull with an easy catch to Dhananjaya de Silva at square leg. Rathnayake struck on the first ball of his spell dismissing Shoaib Bashir caught by Kumara at mid-off to skittle out for 325.

Pathum Nissanka and Karunaratne faced one over before the lunch break. Nissanka looked in sublime touch with some lovely shots keeping the scoreboard ticking to put some pressure on the England bowlers. When things looked good, the horrible mix-up led to the run out of Karaunate. Nissanka and Karaunate added 34 runs for the opening wicket.

Nissanka kept the momentum going for Sri Lanka with a flurry of boundaries. Chris Woakes had to bowl off-spin due to bad light. Chris Woakes returned to pace bowling dismissing Kusal Mendis with a good catch by Harry Brook at slips. Nissanka and Mendis added 36 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Nissanka looked in great touch keeping the scoreboard ticking reaching fifty off 40 deliveries. Josh Hull took his maiden Test wicket dismissing well-set Nissanka caught by Woakes at mid-off leaving Lanka in trouble. Stone struck again to dismiss Chandimal without opening his account.

Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis proved their worth with some lovely shots against the pace bowlers. The left-handed Mendis continued his superb form making sure that Sri Lanka recover from a tough position. Sri Lanka went into the tea break at 142 for 5.

The tea session began off brightly as England’s captain Pope was asked to bowl spinners. Dhananjaya de Silva kept the scoreboard ticking along with Kamindu Mendis.

Dhananjaya was given a chance as Josh Hull dropped an easy catch. Both Sri Lankan batters kept the scoreboard ticking with rotation of strike. Dhananjaya reached his half-century off 81 deliveries while Kamindu Mendis scored fifty off 60 deliveries. The umpires decided to call off play due to bad light with Sri Lanka on 211 for 5. Both put on so far 118 runs for the 6th wicket.
