Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024: Indian Team Beat Japan In A Thrilling Contest
The
defending champions India defeated Japan in the 2nd semi-finals of
the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024 played at Rajgir Sports Complex, Bihar
on 19th November.
Indian team
began the first quarter with aggression earning a penalty corner which was
superbly saved by Japanese goalkeeper Yu Kudo. The hosts showed aggression
right from the word go putting enough pressure, but the Japanese defense and
Kudo kept their calm. At the end of the first quarter, the score remained 0-0.
It was an
aggressive start for the Indian team in the second quarter. The hosts earned 3
back to penalty corners but it did not yield any results. Preeti Dubey went off
the field meaning a 2-minute suspension. India earned 2 more penalty corners
which was saved by Yu Kudo. Sunelita Toppo was given a green card meaning a two-minute
suspension. The Indian team got plenty of chances to score, but the Japanese
defense and Kudo denied goals. At the end of the first quarter, the score
remained 0-0. India dominated the circle penetrations with 13 as compared to 2
by Japan. The hosts also had 56 possessions as compared to 44 by Japan.
The third
quarter began well again for the Indian team with 2 back-to-back penalty
corners. It was brilliantly saved by Yu Kudo. The hosts kept the pressure on
the Japanese team with another penalty corner but did not yield any results. It
was a dominating performance by the Indian team keeping pressure but could not
convert into goals. Deepika missed a golden chance to score with the shot going
wide. Yu Kudo saved another superb shot from a penalty corner. At the end of
the third quarter, the score remained 0-0.
Indian team
started the final quarter with another penalty corner. The rebound shot by
Sangita Kumari goes wide off the goalpost. Indian team earned another penalty
stroke with a push to Deepika. Navneet Kaur went past Yu Kudo giving a 1-0 lead
in the 48th minute. Soon after, the Indian team earned another
penalty corner which was denied a goal by the Japanese defense. A Great run by
Sunelita Toppo and a goal by Lalremsiami in the 56th minute gave a
2-0 lead for the Indian team. The Japanese team earned their first penalty
corner of the match as Bichu saved a superb goal. The visitors decided to take
the goalkeeper away.
It was a dominating performance by the Indian
team as they won the match by a 2-0 margin. The Indian team had 23 circle
penetrations as compared to 6 by Japan, 57 percent possession by India as
compared to 43 by Japan.
The
defending champions India will face the higher ranked team in the tournament
China in the finals tomorrow while Japan will take on Malaysia for the 3rd
place playoff match.
