India Open 2025 Day 1: Decent Start For Indian Shuttlers
It was a
decent start for the Indian shuttlers as 5 of them made it into the second
round of the Super 750 India Open played at KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium, New Delhi
on 14th January 2025.
PV Sindhu started
her India Open campaign with a comfortable win over Sung S-y of Chinese Taipei
in two straight games. The first game saw Sindhu dominate her opponent keeping
her under immense pressure, winning by 21-14. Both players fought for each
point in the second game before the Indian held onto her nerves to win the
match by 22-20. She will face M Suizu of Japan.
The prequalifies
Kiran George registered a thrilling three-game win over Tanaka of Japan. It was
a closely fought contest right from the word go as both players fought for each
point. Kiran held onto his nerves to win the first game by 21-19. Tanaka showed
his domination in the second game putting enough pressure on George to win it
by 21-14.
The third and deciding game was another closely fought encounter as both players fought for each point. It ebbed and flowed till the end before George held onto his nerves, winning it by 27-25 to move into the second round. He will face the winner of Vitisdarn and Lanier. Kidambi Srikanth gave a walkover to his Chinese opponent Weng H Y of China in the first round.
Number 1 men’s
doubles pairing of Satwik/Chirag Shetty registered a thrilling win over Malaysian
Man W C and Tee KW in three sets. The first game proved to be a thriller as
both pairs fought for each point before the Indians showed their class winning
by 23-21.
The second
game was another closely fought one as both pairs kept taking points and never
allowed the others to run away with the game. This time around, Man WC and Tee
KW won it by 21-19.
Both pairs fought
toe to toe in the initial stages of the deciding game. Satwik/Chirag took an
11-9 lead at the mid-game break. After the interval, the Indian pairing
dominated and won the match by 21-16 to move into the second round. They will
face the winner of Krishnamurthy Roy/KS Prateek versus Mitsuhashi/Okamura of
Japan.
The mixed
doubles pairing of Tanisha Crasto/Dhruv Kapila registered a thrilling win over
Chen C K and Hsu Y H. It was a disappointing outing for the Indians in the
first game as they suffered an 8-21 loss. Crasto and Kapila showed great
fighting spirit to win the second game by 21-19 before winning the decider by 21-17
to move into the second round. They will face Midorikawa/Saito of Japan.
KA Bhat and
S Gautam registered a straight-game win over the Canadian pair of J Dent and
Lai. The first game was a closely fought encounter as Bhat and Gautam held onto
their nerves to win it by 22-20. Bhat and Gautam fought a strong battle in the
second game with a scoreline an 21-18 to move into the next round. They will
face Li Y J and Luo X M of China.
The major
disappointment was the women’s doubles pairing of Tressa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand
suffering a closely fought loss to Igarashi and Sakuramoto of Japan. Last year
also, Jolly and Gopichand suffered a loss in the first round of the India Open.
The Indian
pairing gave a tough fight before losing the match by 21-23, 19-21 to be
knocked out in the first round.
Pramtuesh/S
Singh lost to Thailand’s Jongsathapornparn and Suwchahi in three games. The pre-qualifiers
Pramtuesh/ Singh stunned them in the first game winning by 21-19. Singh and
Pramtuesh struggled with the pace of the opponent losing the next two games with
a scoreline of 15-21, 12-21.
