Malaysia Open 2025 Day 2: Impressive Performances By Indian Shuttlers

 

The Indian Shuttlers had some decent performances on the 2nd day of the Super 1000 Malaysia Open 2025 played at Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur on 8th January. After a disappointing outing in 2024, a few of them started with a bang and looked sharp.

In the men’s singles section, HS Prannoy cruised past Canada’s Brian Young in three games. The first game saw the Indian dominating with aggressive smashes and putting the opponent under immense pressure winning it easily by 21-12. The second game saw Prannoy putting on a display of badminton taking a 6-3 lead before the match was stopped due to leakage of roof. After some time, Young showed attacking strokes taking an 11-9 lead at the mid-game interval before the match was again stopped due to roof leakage. The match started again today with Brian playing aggressive badminton and winning the second game easily at 21-17.   

Prannoy dominated the third and the deciding game putting enough pressure on Brian by not allowing them to come back into the game, winning by 21-15 to move into the second round. He will face Li Shifeng of China who defeated Pranshu Rajawat in two straight games by 21-11, 21-16.

Malvika Bansod had an impressive outing defeating Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei in two straight games. The young Indian showed great promise right from the word go putting pressure on Goh playing attacking badminton. At the mid-game interval, Malvika had a good lead. After the break, Goh showed great fightback skills before the left-handed Malvika took points, winning the first game at 21-15. It was another good performance by the young Indian keeping the pressure on the Malaysian before winning the second game by 21-16 to move into the second round. She will face the winner of Han Yue of China.

Akarshi Kashyap suffered a straight-game loss to Jackobsen of Denmark. The Indian gave a tough fight in the first game before fizzling out with a scoreline of 14-21. It was one-way traffic in the second game as Kashyap struggled to lose by 12-21 to be knocked out of the tournament. Anupama Upadhyay gave a tough fight to higher-ranked Pornpwee Chochouwong of Thailand in three games. It was a close-fought first game with both players fighting for each point before the experienced Thailand player won it by 21-17. The second game was another closely fought affair, but this time around Anupama held onto her nerves winning by 21-18. Chochouwong showed her domination right from the word go in the third game to win it by 21-8.  

In women’s doubles, Rituparna Panda and Shweta Panda suffered a straight-game loss to the Aimsaard sisters of Thailand. It was a disappointing performance by the Indian pair as they struggled right from the word go trailing by 4-11 at the mid-game interval. After the break, the Panda sisters played aggressive badminton pushing the experienced Thai pair before losing the first game by 17-21. The Indian pair put up some fight in the initial stages of the second game before the Thai pair dominated winning by 21-10.

The women’s doubles section saw Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa lose to Japan Matsuyama and Chiuru Shida in straight games. It was an ideal start for the Indian pair as they put pressure on the Japanese pair putting them under immense pressure. At the mid-game interval, Crasto and Ponnappa had an 11-6 lead. After the break, both pairs were involved in long rallies including 55 shots, 63 & 62 shots. The match ebbed and flowed before Shida and Matsuyama won the first game 23-21. It was a dominating performance by the Japanese pair in the second game right from the word go putting Ashwini and Crasto under immense pressure taking advantage of tired legs. At the mid-game interval, Shida and Matsuyama had a commanding 11-3 lead. After the break, the Japanese pair looked in sublime form winning by 21-12.

Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila defeated Ko SH and Eo HW of South Korea in two straight games. It was a dominating performance by the mixed doubles pair of India winning with a scoreline of 21-13, 21-14 to move into the second round. They will face Cheng X and Zhang C of China in the next round. In an all-Indian affair, S Karunakaran and Variyath defeated A Surya and Pramuthesh by 21-13, 21-15 to move into the second round. They will face the experienced Malaysian pair of Goh SH and SJ Lai.

Satwik/Chirag Shetty showed their attacking skills to beat Lu MC and Tang K W of Chinese Taipei. The first game saw the Indian pair showing great skills not allowing any chances to their opponents winning by 21-10. Lu and Tang made a strong comeback in the second game as they kept the pressure on the Indians with an 11-6 lead at the break. Despite some lovely shots, Satwik/Chirag lost it by 16-21. Satwik/Chirag showed domination after the initial stages to win the decider by 21-5 to move into the next round. They will face NM Azriyn and Tan W K of Malaysia.

4.      Satwik/Chirag Shetty defeated Lu MC and Tang KW-21-10, 16-21, 21-5

5.      Rituparna Panda/Shweta Panda lost B Aimsaard/N Aimsaard-17-21, 10-21

6.      Tanisha Crasto/Ashwini Ponnappa lost Matsuyama/Shida- 21-23, 12-21

7.      Akarshi Kashyap lost to Jackobsen- 14-21, 12-21.

8.       Anupama Upadhyay lost to Chochouwong-17-21, 21-18,8-21.
