Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 SF 1: Karnataka Register Comfortable Win To Enter Finals

 

Karnataka produced a dominating performance in the first semi-finals against defending champions Haryana played at Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara on 15th January 2025.  

Karnataka captain Mayank Agarwal won the toss and decided to field first. Himanshu Rana and Arsh Ranga got off to a steady start against Prasidh Krishna and Koushik. Abhilash Shetty struck in his first over by getting rid of Arsh Ranga with a catch to Paddikal. Ranga and Rana added 32 runs for the opening wicket. Captain Ankit Kumar looked in decent touch along with Himanshu Rana. At the end of the first 10 overs, Haryana scored 50 for 1.

Himanshu Rana and Kumar kept the scoreboard ticking with singles and kept hitting some lovely shots to the boundary. The experienced Shreyas Gopal struck for Karnataka dismissing Ankit Kumar hitting in front of the wicket. Rana and Kumar added 70 runs for the 2nd wicket. The Karnataka bowlers kept it tight, not allowing Rana and Nishant Sindhu to score runs easily.

Hardik Raj got the much-needed breakthrough by dismissing well-set Himanshu Rana with a simple stumping by Shritjith. After the drinks break, Abhilash Shetty struck twice in the same over dismissing Nishant Sindhu and Parth Vyas to leave Haryana in trouble.  

Dinesh Bana and Rahul Tewaita provided some stability before Shreyas Gopal produced a beauty to dismiss Bana. Bana and Tewaita added 30 runs for the 6th wicket. Rahul Tewaita was given a reprieve as Krishna dropped a sitter. Prasidh Krishna got rid of Rahul Tewaita with a lovely delivery to leave Haryana struggling. Krishna struck again in the same over to dismiss Anshul Kamboj.

After some resistance, Sumit Kumar tried to hit a big shot, caught by Paddikal at long-on. Anuj Thakral and Amit Rana showed some superb resistance in the death overs. Both took singles keeping the scoreboard ticking. Both scored 17 runs against Koushik in the 50th over to help Haryana post 237 for 9. Thakral and Rana put on unbeaten 39 runs for the final wicket. For Karnataka, Abhilash Shetty picked his career-best figures of 4 for 34 in 10 overs, Shreyas Gopal and Prasidh Krishna took 2 wickets each.

Chasing down 238 runs to win, Karnataka got off to the worst possible start as their inform captain Mayank Agarwal was dismissed in the first over by Anshul Kamboj. Devdutt Paddikal and Aneesh steadied the ship with positive strokes keeping the momentum going. At the end of the first 10 overs, Karnataka scored 48 for 1.

After the first drinks break, Aneesh was dismissed providing a simple catch to Sumit Kumar. Aneesh and Paddikal added 62 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Devdutt Paddikal showed his class keeping the scoreboard ticking along with Smaran. Both batters kept the momentum going hitting boundaries and sixes at will. Paddikal reached his fifty off 72 deliveries. Paddikal and Smaran showed their class keeping the momentum going.

Paddikal superb innings ended by providing a simple catch to Amit Rana at mid-off. Paddikal and Smaran added 128 runs for the 3rd wicket. Smaran provided great support with his fifty off 69 balls. Shritjith failed to contribute much caught by Himanshu Rana at backward point.  

Smaran looked in great touch along with the experienced Shreyas Gopal. Sindhu produced a lovely delivery to get rid of Smaran. Shreyas Gopal and Abhinav Manohar did the job as Karnataka won the match by 5 wickets with 16 balls to spare.

For his 86 off 113 deliveries and 3 catches, Devdutt Paddikal was named the player of the match award.

Vidarbha will face Maharashtra in the second semi-finals to be played at Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara on 16th January 2025.

Karnataka 238 for 5 in 47.2 overs ( DDP 86, Smaran 76, Nishant Sindhu 2/47) beat Haryana 237 for 9 in 50 overs ( Ankit Kumar 48, Himanshu Rana 44, Abhilash Shetty 4/34) by 5 wickets.
