Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 SF 2: Vidarbha Register Dominating Win Over Maharashtra

 

Vidarbha registered a dominating win over Maharashtra in the second semi-finals of the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy played at Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara on 16th January.

Maharashtra captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and decided to field first. Yash Rathod began the first over with 3 boundaries against Rajneesh Gurbani. Dhruv Shorey and Yash Rathod looked confident keeping the pressure on Maharashtra bowlers. Rathod and Shorey scored 49 runs in the first 10 overs.

After the first 10 overs, Rathod and Shorey kept the momentum going, not allowing the bowlers to settle. Rathod reached his fifty off 54 deliveries while Shorey completed his half-century off 56 balls. It was a great performance by the Vidarbha openers keeping the scoreboard ticking, hitting boundaries, and taking singles with ease.

Rathod made the batting look easy, reaching his century off 90 deliveries. Shorey also reached his milestone off 104 balls to keep the momentum going for Vidarbha. Bachaav eventually broke through dismissing Yash Rathod shattering the stumps. Rathod and Shorey put on a record 224 runs for the opening wicket.

Mukesh Choudhary dismissed the other opener Dhruv Shorey caught by Ankit Bawne. Vidarbha captain Karun Nair showed his intent by putting the bad deliveries away for boundaries. Jitesh Sharma also looked in great touch smashing boundaries and sixes with ease. Both toyed with Maharashtra’s bowling with big hits. Jitesh Sharma completed his fifty off 30 balls and was soon dismissed by Mukesh Chaudhary. Jitesh Sharma and Karun Nair added 93 runs for the 3rd wicket.

Karun Nair’s superb form this season continued, reaching fifty off 35 deliveries. After his fifty, Nair destroyed Maharashtra’s bowling hitting 24 runs against Rajneesh Gurbani including 3 fours and 2 sixes. Karun Nair and Shubham Dubey put on 42 unbeaten runs for the 4th wicket as Dubey scored just 5 runs. Nair remained not out on 88 off 44 deliveries with 9 fours and 5 sixes.

Chasing a mammoth total of 381 runs to win, Ruturaj Gaikwad fell to a stunning catch by Jitesh Sharma. Rahul Tripathi looked in good touch with lovely shots. Bhute struck dismissing dangerous Tripathi with an easy catch to Jitesh Sharma. Tripathi and Arshin Kulkarni added 41 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Maharashtra ended the first 10 overs with the scoreboard reading 57 for 2. Arshin Kulkarni and Siddesh Veer played some lovely shots but made a lot of dot deliveries which kept the asking rate climbing.

Rekhade distributed the timber of Siddesh Veer. Arshin and Siddesh Veer added 62 runs for the 3rd wicket. Arshin Kulkarni looked impressive with his fifty off 64 deliveries. Ankit Bawne upped the ante after struggling initially. Nalkande eventually struck to dismiss Arshin Kulkarni. Kulkarni and Bawne added 94 runs for the 4th wicket.

Ankit Bawne looked impressive with his shots, reaching fifty off 47 deliveries. He was soon dismissed by Nalkande caught by Dubey. Nikhil Naik provided some entertainment with a flurry of boundaries and sixes; it was a tall ask for Maharashtra’s batters.

Kazi and Nikhil Naik added 42 runs for the 6th wicket. Nikhil Naik and Satyajeet Bachaav provided some entertainment as they added 44 runs for the 7th wicket. Maharashtra ended the innings on 311 for 7 in 50 overs.

For his 116 of 104 deliveries, Yash Rathod was named the player of the match award. Vidarbha will face Karnataka in the finals to be played on 18th January 2025.

Vidarbha 380 for 3 in 50 overs (Yash Rathod 116, Dhruv Shorey 114, Mukesh Chaudhary 2/80) beat Maharashtra 311 for 7 in 50 overs (Arshin Kulkarni 90, Nachiket Bhute 3/68) by 69 runs.
