SA T20 2025 Eliminator: Defending Champions Stay Alive
The
defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape Town stay alive with an impressive
win over Johannesburg Super Kings in the eliminator played at SuperSport Park,
Centurion on 5th February 2025.
JSK captain
Faf du Plessis won the toss and decided to field first. Tony de Zorzi and David
Bedingham got off to a flying start putting CSK bowlers under immense pressure.
Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana got the much-needed breakthrough by dismissing
Zorzi. Zorzi and Bedingham put on 46 runs in 3.2 overs. Soon after, Bedingham
also fell with a stunning catch by Faf du Plessis.
At the end
of the first six overs, Sunrisers Eastern Cape scored 55 for 2. Johannesburg
Super Kings struck twice in quick time dismissing Hermann and Tom Abell leaving
them in trouble. Aiden Markram provided stability along with Tristian Stubbs.
Markram and Stubbs steadied the ship taking singles and keeping the momentum.
The veteran
Imran Tahir got the big scalp of dangerous Tristian Stubbs. Stubbs and Markram
added 56 runs for the 5th wicket. Marco Jansen showed his prowess with
power-hitting while Markram reached fifty off just 35 deliveries. Jansen made
the batting look easy keeping momentum in the last 23 balls. Sunrisers Eastern
Cape captain Markram remained not out on 62. Markam and Jansen added 53 runs
for the 6th wicket. Jansen was dismissed off the final delivery.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape Town posted 184 for 6 in 20 overs. For JSK, Imran Tahir
ended with figures of 2 for 21.
Chasing
down 185 runs to win, Devon Conway showed intent right from the word go putting
pressure on Sunrisers bowlers. On the other hand, Faf du Plessis struggled with
his timing not able to hit boundaries with ease. Marco Jansen got the
breakthrough dismissing dangerous Conway. Conway and Plessis added 40 runs for the
opening wicket.
Johannesburg
Super Kings ended the first six overs at 49 for 1. Sunrisers Eastern Cape
bowlers did not allow JSK batters to score runs easily and grabbed wickets at
regular intervals. Jonny Bairstow provided some impetus with a quickfire 37 off
17 deliveries, but it was not enough for JSK to go through. Sunrisers Eastern
Cape defended the target easily, winning by 32 runs.
Craig
Overton, Liam Dawson & Ottinel Baartman took 2 wickets each for Sunrisers
Eastern Cape.
SEC 184 for
6 in 20 overs (Markram 62*, Bedingham 27, Imran Tahir 2/21) beat JSK 152 for 7
in 20 overs (Jonny Bairstow 37, Conway 30, Craig Overton 2/20) by 32 runs.
For his unbeaten
62 off 40 deliveries, Sunrisers Eastern Cape captain Aiden Markram was named
the player of the match award. They will face Paarl Royals in the qualifier 2
to be played on 6th February 2025.
