SA T20 2025 Qualifier 1: MI Cape Town Reach Finals
Under the
leadership of Rashid Khan, Mumbai India Cape Town reached the finals with a
comprehensive win over Paarl Royals in the first qualifier played at ST George
Stadium, Port Elizabeth on 4th February 2025.
Paarl
Royals captain David Miller won the toss and decided to field first. MI openers
Ryan Rickleton and Rassie Van Der Dussen showed intent right from the word go
putting pressure on the Royals bowling. Both openers kept the scoreboard
ticking making life tough for the bowlers. At the end of the first six overs,
MI raced away to 66 for 0.
Van Der
Dussen and Rickleton made the batting look easy. Galiem broke the partnership,
dismissing Dussen with a simple catch to Miller. Dussen and Rickleton added 87
runs for the opening wicket. Paarl Royals struck again as Dunith Wellage got
rid of other opener Rickleton. Wellage got rid of Afghanistan opener Sediqullah
Atal as Dinesh Karthik took a good catch leaving Mumbai Indians in some
trouble.
Dewald
Brevis and George Linde stitched an important partnership with some lusty blows
helping MI recover from three quick wickets. Fortuin struck dismissing Linde
with a return catch. Brevis and Linde added 32 runs for the 4th
wicket.
Delano
Potgieter showed positive intent right from the word go along with Brevis. Both
MI batters smashed Paarl Royals bowlers all over park in the death overs
ensuring that they posted a competitive total of 199 for 4. Potgieter and Brevis
put on unbeaten 74 runs for the 5th wicket. Dunith Wellage was the
pick of the bowlers for the Royals with 2 for 23 in 4 overs.
Mumbai
Indian Bowlers Showed Class
Luhan dre Pretorius
and Mitchell Owen began the chase of 200 runs with a quickfire start before Kagiso
Rabada got the breakthrough dismissing Pretorius. Trent Boult got rid of the
other opener Mitchell Owen cheaply.
Corbin Bosch
dismissed Rubin Hermann cheaply to leave the Royals in trouble. At the end of
the first six overs, Paarl Royals scored 45 for 3. MI bowlers kept picking
wickets at regular intervals.
David
Miller and Wellage tried to steady the ship with a 33-run stand for the 5th
wicket. Miller along with Dinesh Karthik kept the chase alive hitting some big
shots before Linde dismissed Miller providing a simple catch to Brevis. Miller
and Dinesh added 35 runs for the 6th wicket. Mumbai Indian bowlers did
not allow any partnerships after that to bowl out the Royals for 160.
For Mumbai
Indian Cape Town, Trent Boult, Rabada, Bosch and Rashid Khan took 2 wickets
each while Linde grabbed 1 wicket. Mumbai Indians won the match by 39 runs to
qualify for the final directly.
Rashid Khan
became the leading wicket-taker in T20’s surpassing Dwayne Bravo’s record. Mumbai
Indians finished bottom of the SA T20 in 2023 and 2024.
MICT 199
for 4 in 20 overs (Ryan Rickleton 44, Brevis 44*, Dunith Wellage 2/23) beat PR
160 in 19.4 overs (David Miller 45, Dinesh Karthik 31, Kagiso Rabada 2/18) by
39 runs.
For his unbeaten
32 of 17 deliveries, Delano Potgieter was named the player of the match award.
Mumbai Indians qualify for the finals directly.
Defending
champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape will face Johannesburg Super Kings in the eliminator
to be played today.
