WPL 2025: Delhi Capitals Becomes The First Team To Qualify For Playoffs
Under the captaincy of Meg Lanning, Delhi Capitals became the first team to qualify for the playoffs stage with a resounding win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on 1st March 2025.
DC captain Meg Lanning won the toss and decided to field
first. Shikha Pandey got the early breakthrough dismissing RCB captain Smriti
Mandhana with a simple catch to Meg Lanning at first slips. Dani Wyatt and
Ellyse Perry steadied the ship putting pressure on the Delhi Capitals bowling.
Right after the first timeout, Marizanne Kapp got rid of
Dani Wyatt Hodge with a lovely delivery. Hodge and Perry added 44 runs for the
2nd wicket. Delhi Capitals fielding and catching was not great
enough as they dropped some tough chances. N Charani bowled with disciplined lines
and lengths. The left arm-spinner struck twice in the same over getting wickets
of Raghvi Bisht and Richa Ghosh to dent RCB’s innings. Bisht and Ellyse Perry
added 66 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Delhi Capitals bowlers kept tight in the death overs not
allowing Ellyse Perry and other RCB batters to score runs freely. It was a disciplined
effort by DC bowlers to restrict RCB at 147 for 5. Ellyse Perry and Georgia Wareham
could not hit boundaries against Annabel Sutherland in the final over.
Great Batting Effort By Shafali Varma and Jess Jonassen
Chasing a modest total of 148 runs to win, Delhi Capitals did
not start well as Meg Lanning's struggle ended with a stunning catch by Ellyse
Perry at mid-on. Jess Jonassen struggled initially before putting pressure on
RCB bowlers.
Jess Jonassen was promoted to number 3 ahead of Jemimah
Rodrigues. She showed intent by playing attacking strokes. After the initial struggle,
Shafali Varma did not allow RCB bowlers to settle. At the end of the first six
overs, DC scored 41 for 1.
After the first six overs, Varma and Jonassen scored runs
with ease keeping the scoreboard ticking. Jonassen showed her class smashing
RCB bowlers all over the park reaching half-century off 30 deliveries. Shafali
Varma looked impressive with her timing completing fifty off 30 balls.

Both batters did not look in trouble and won the match easily by 9 wickets.
Varma and Jonassen added unbeaten 146 runs for the 2nd wicket.
With this victory, Delhi Capitals qualified for the playoff
stage with 10 points. For her unbeaten 80 off 43 deliveries, Shafali Varma was
named the player of the match award.
